Hey all,

I am a single mother, currently receiving Centrelink payments and also maintenance from the father ($50/week).

I am starting to find that I am struggling with this amount of money and would like to make my bank balance a little more healthy and not live week to week.

I am going back to university this year, starting on the 27th Feb and currently have my DD in day care on Mon, Tues and Wed and these are the days I will be studying. So, I obviously have 4 days without day care or study. However, I can prolly get come care for DD if need be.

I was wondering if anyone knew of some work I could possibly do being a single mum, who is studying. I don't want to have too much on my plate (for obvious reasons) but I also don't want to not be spending time with DD.

Is there anyone out there in a similar situation? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do? I feel like I am drowning here with the lack of money to keep my head above water. As much as I appreciate the government for helping me out, it just isn't enough!!

HELP!!!

Hey Brooke,

Maybe doing at home parties of something would be easier for you.
Like Body Shop or Enjo or even Adultshop ;)

I'm not sure how much you can make at these things. I think most of them pay about 20% commission which can be quite a lot if you do enough. That way you can work after hours when others can be at home to watch Layla.

I have hosted quite a few of these types of parties (Bodyshop, Adultshop, Enjo & Tupperware) & they usually sell at least $300 of products which means you would get at least $60 just for a couple of hours work.

I am thinking about looking into one of these myself.

Good luck!

Hey Polony,

How about trying for some work at the university you'll be going to? When I was at uni I held down a full time job on campus and went to uni part time. It was great, because I could schedule my lectures and tutes around my work hours, and didn't have to factor in any travelling time.

It was also good because being on campus, my employers knew I was a uni student and were pretty flexible.

Another thing, when you do start uni, make sure you let your professors and tutors know that you are a single mum, working to support you and your little one, and also (obviously) a uni student as well. I found that when I went to uni as a mature age student with lots of commitments, the professors and tutors were really understanding, and encouraging of all the commitments I had. That can really help, because you are taking on a lot, and will need lots of support.

Good on you for doing all this, you have my vote :D

Hey there,

I am also studying this year and have 2 youngsters under 5 at home, and one in school full time. Although i have a hubby our money is severely stretched, so i do casual work - usually three 4 hour night shifts on reception at our local RSL club. Sounds daunting, but considering i start at 7 and finish at 11, im remarkably relaxed when i get home. Its good to have social interaction with other people when you have young ones and i find it easier to relax at work than i do at home because i dont have the kids hanging off my feet! haha Its not much pay but good enough for a big grocery shop and treats for the kids so im happy with that.

I dont know how your babysitting arrangements work though :( its easy for me to say as i have hubby at home to watch them, is there anyone you know and trust to look after your littlie if you choose this avenue? If not, the suggestion above for possibly working on campus might be ideal; i did this myself working in enrolments and it worked a treat. They even offered me permanent part time work after my contract was up :)

Well done on all your hard work and best of luck!
