View Full Version : What is a Heart murmur???
Recently i took my 12 mth old son to the doctors for his immunisation and she had picked up a heart murmur!
She said that he may out grow this!
but she would like me to got to the royal childrens hospital to see a pediatrition about it just to be safe.
And there maybe a months wait on the appointment!
has anyone had this before and if so what can this be!
im worried as a month away seems forever
I have had a heart mummer since birth and for me it has never caused me any trouble. Most heart mummers are innocent and if he has no trouble up until now I would suggest there is a good chance his will be to.
Good luck I hope all goes well.

Hi
My son was born with a heart murmur and the ped sent us to a cardologist at the Royal Charles just to be sure and he said it was nothing to worry about and would probably grow out of it. He is now 14months and we have had no probs with it.

I have a heart murmer, I have had it since I ws born. Mine is due to having a small hole in my heart when I was born that heale up of its own accord but left the murmur. (I was almost 3 months premmie) I have been seeing cardiologists all my life as they have been concerned that the murmur is very loud and I have a very fast heartbeat - but even that is ok. My brother ha a heart murmer as a baby but grew iut of it by the time he was 3 years old.
I think doctors are not so concerned with the murmur, just of the cause of it. Most murmurs have no underlying problems and are therefore nothing to worry about

murmur is an unusual or additional sound to the 'normal' heartbeat - meaning something different with the flow of the blood. Often it is very minor and generally grown out of. though many adults have them and it causes no them no problems.
my DD was born with a murmur which was resultant of a teeny tiny hole in the heart (between the two ventricles) ... so there was a bit of blood flowing through there where there shouldn't be.
we had a ecg in the hospital then a check up 5weeks later, and it had healed over in that time. they said they I should check to see if there is any delay or lag in growth, development and movement ... which there wasn't.
from what i have read in your post it sounds like it must be minor
all the best!

My son was born 2 weeks ago and has a heart murmur they tell me it's nothing to worry about as it's normally a small hole in the heart which normally closes over with time... I am taking him to see the cardioligist but cant get in till mid March (just to make sure )
I wouldnt worry too much I did and I was stressed out until it was actually explained to me properly...

Hi Savina
In January we went to the doctor with my step son (3) as he had a really bad bronchial cough...we were told he had a heart murmur...and the next 2 weeks waiting for the xray and having the results were tough...but the great news was it was an 'innocent' murmur which basically means nothing to worry about...apparently (I have now read up lots) murmurs are very common tons of people have thema dn don't even know....the majority are innocent too...
We were particuarly worried as he was born really ickle (his mother smoked and drank throughout pregnancy :( ) and he has had probs since birth with breathing, allergies size and development...we were kinda oh no not something else...but luckily it was ok...

I also had a heart murmur when i was born and i grew out of it eventually. It hasnt caused me any probs either so i think that they are fairly common and as long as it isnt a big hole or anything should be fine.
I Was Told, In High School 80's, That I Have A Heart Murmer. All It Is Is A Sound That The Blood Makes Going Into The Heart. During This I Found Out That My Oldest Living Aunt Had Had One. We Were All Told That Its Nothing To Worry About And That You Grow Out Of It.
I Mean, Its Just A Sound. In My Opinion, As Long As Its Pumping, It Can Make Any Sound It Wants Too.
T
Tammy1, it's not JUST a sound. It's a heart defect and can be quite serious.

I hope you get the appointment soon.
It's so easy for Drs to say not to worry but when it's your child of cause you worry.
Good luck

My third child was born with a murmur which turned out to be a small hole btween the left & right ventricles had lots of chech-ups with cardiologists till she was 3 they then said they didn't need to see her anymore. Our GP could keep an eye on her, she is almost 11 now and the only problems we ever had were her picking up bugs that were going around. She also needs antibiotic cover before any invasive dental work or surgery. she is a very active girl and hasn't held her back from doing anything. Good Luck !!!!:D
