That's what I want to know! I had never heard of an fs until joining bubhub. The things we learn here!

I don't know the real difference - but our FS was not all that expensive. Around $70 per visit and a lot of that was reimbursed by Medicare. Three visits later we were lucky enough to get our BFP.

Good luck :fingerscrossed:

Hi

I too have just been referred to a FS. My doc gave me the choice to be referred to who ever I wanted. First of all I picked a Gyno who has a specialist interest in PCOS/Fertility and then after some research I found another Doc who only specialised only in PCOS and fertility problems. He is also based at a specialised fertility centre, so if long term I need any other assistance (IVF etc) then all my history would be one place. As for cost, I found no difference at all for the initial consultant, however I don’t know what the difference would be for prescriptions etc .Both options were going through the private system, not public. My appt is on the 8th August so will let you know how I go.

Hi Sexy_Minx,

I've seen 2 gyn's in the past 2.5years one was just a gyn, the other is a gyn/fs who specialises in fertility problems and pcos.

The biggest difference I found was the diagnosis of PCO. I saw the gyn (not fs) in Nov 05 and showed her my u/s she said nothing wrong everything was normal. Showed the same u/s to the 2nd gyn (f/s) on my first visit in Jan 07, she took one look at that same u/s and said you've got PCOS (after blood tests she altered the diagnosis to PCO).

Price was about the same $150 initial visit, $70 per visit after that. If I had a choice I'd chose the FS or a gyn who works in a fertility clinic/centre.

My FS is a gyn/ob. As far as I know, some gynos take a particular interest in infertility. She doesn't have FS on the door, only gyn/ob. My FS has her own practice but is linked to Monash IVF (that's how I found her, I called them). Her costs are $140 for the initial and $70 for each after and I got about 60%-70% of that cost back from Medicare. HTH:) .

Im not sure but I thought there perhaps was a difference in the treatment a gyno could offer, such as they could perhaps offer you Clomid for Ovulation Induction but would have to refer you onto a FS for FSH injections or IVF treatment...

I opted to go straight to a FS at a specialised centre, when i asked the question when getting a referal from my GP they basically said to me well a gyno will refer you onto a FS in the end anyway....

I am going to see a Gyno in 1 hour re: having troubles falling pregnant with 3rd bub. I asked to see my Gyno cause if i wanted to see a FS i would have to travel out of town. My Gyno delivered both my boys so i know he is good. My Gyno will look into everything possible i think cause he is Catholic and operates out the Mater Hospital (Catholic) and as far as i can gather Catholics dont believe in IVF or getting tubes tied etc.
