Nice suburbs in Victoria?

Hihi,
Just wondering if there are any suggestions for nice suburbs to settle in in Victoria? While I love the place, I don't travel over there very often, and haven't lived there before, so don't know the place as well as Perth.

Hubby has an offer in Victoria -- Ballarat actually... I'm not too keen living in Ballarat itself as it's too far away from Melb city... and travelling there would take slightly more than an hour...

Was wondering if there are nice suburbs along the way -- nice people, nice community, nice houses ... :)

melbourne itself has wonderful areas
like
st. kilda
whole bayside (like brighton, hampton,sandringham)
toorak
south yarra
southbank
williamstown
prahran

Unfortunately these places are much too far away from Ballarat :(

I am not to familiar with the north/west suburbs but there are a lot of new estates being built atm.
