My poor DD has a very bad red, weeping, smelly rash under her arm pit. I was very worried so took her to the Dr yeaterday. He said it was strepticcocus, a bacteria infeciton that usually occurs in the nappy area.

He said it was quite common, and not to worry, although I've never heard of it! Apparently babies catch it from their mothers during the birth! i didn't know I had it...

he perscibed antibiotics in a cream and took a swab and said if it didn't clear in 24 hours to go to hospital. I'm very worried, she's only 6 weeks old, I've been googling this condition and the info i've been reading seems as though its very serious.

Does anyone know of this infection? Is is as serious as i'm thinking it is?

I've never heard of it. Have you found out anything more, and how is your little one doing?

Hi Katie, sorry to hear about your dd :hugs:
I have heard of this in kids and I know that the antibiotic cream is used first and if it doesn't clear up then they are put ona course of oral antibiotics. I'm not sure about babies however.

It is highly contagious so make sure you wash your hands thoroughly so as not to spread it (it usually enters the skin through a cut or sore)

Try not to worry about the stuff on google, I just googled some stuff and it sounds very grim but it's talking about rare cases in most instances. Strep is the same bacteria that causes "strep throat" (basic sore throat) which is very common.

As long as you follow the doctor's instructions re using the cream dilligently and watching to see whether it clears up, I'm sure dd will be fine. I'd just watch her for any signs of illness etc. Hope she feels better soon!! :fingerscrossed:
