Hi!

I was just reading some of the other threads on lactose intollerence etc. and was wondering if anyones bub had a reaction to full cream milk the first time but grew out of it.

I tried milk on DD cereal and her lips swelled and she vomited it was very scary, anyway the maternal health nurse said lay off for a couple of months then try again.

Is it wishfull thinking that it might have been a one off?

Hey :)

sorry that your bubs reacted badly - how scary for her and you!

I babysat a little girl who had a reaction to her first taste of dairy - she didn't vomit... but broke out in hives/ rash around her mouth..

they waiting and tried a tiny amount a few months later - she was fine after that...

dont know what the 'norm' is though...
hope this helps?!

good luck..

xx

I didn't think babies were supposed to have full cream milk until they were at least 12 months old? Would this have anything to do with it???

They can have it on cereal from seven months but not to drink until twelve months at least that's what the health centre says.

I would hold off until after your bub is 12 months old, there is really no rush as breast milk or formual will sustain them.

The reaction your little one had sounds very scary so I would be looking into that.
Firstly does anyone in your immediate family have allergies? as it is usually hereditary.
Secondly does bub get eczema or has she shown any other kind of responses to certain foods? hard I know as she is still so young and probably hasnt started on too many solids etc.

Sorry Im not much help, wait and see how she goes after the 12 month mark and then if it happens again I would get her allergy tested to be sure :)

We had our son tested and he has some allergies, milk did not show up as one of them but he cant drink it as it makes him very congested, attributes to ear infections and generally he becomes very sick(phlegmy cough, asthma type symptoms) we have been advised to keep him on goats milk or soy.

Good luck

Thanks! I'm still breastfeeding so I know she's getting what she needs. I know there's no rush it's just sometimes I feel like I'm behind where I should be, you know 'what the books say and where other bubs in my mums group are'

Thanks for your advice I think I'll hold off!

Allergies do change all the time. My DD use to be allergic to rice and mayonase, nothing serious mainly just red blotches over her face but now she can happly eat both. The advice your CHN sound right, leave it a few months then try her on a little bit at a time.
Hope all goes well

Lactose intollerance is not usually as bad as dairy allergy. Not definetly sure but think intollerance causes more vomiting and discomfort where as dairy allergy can cause anaphaltic shock (needing epipen). My son has dairy allergy but was ok bf as not lactose intolerant. Seems as though lactose intolerant also have problems with bf. Your childs reaction was the same my son had to peanut butter of which he is also allergic. Would just keep a watch on it and maybe see allergist in a few months. His dairy allergy first showed up when eating cheese and yoghurt - he would become very mucosy and raspy breathing.
