As far as I understand it - a circ can be performed at ANY age....a friend had to have one done for medical reasons at age 32.
As for costs - I wouldn't have a clue....Sorry!
Good luck! :)
ooooo good thread RB , Im going to chime in and ask up until what age can the plastibell method be performed?

I too would like to know thw costs.
My mother nurses a man and he is 80 odd years old and he has just been circumsized as his foreskin had grown over the end of his thingo
Can be done at any age.
I know where the boys were done they'd do it anywhere from one week old to I don't know what age. I'm pretty sure they said that they've used the plastibell method up to 12 years old.
They use the plastibell method, and it cost $330 per child... that was with a 10% off for twins.
Through a doc in Brisbane it costs around $500, from what I have been told. We are going to see a Paedaitric Urologist tomorrow for our son and have no idea of the costs if he does end up having it done.

I was under the impression that they didn't like doing it between certain ages....
i heard they did it up until 2 weeks old, then after 2 years old...but I dont know for sure as DS is not done. sorry cant be of more help.
wow $500! I had no idea it was that much
They strongly recommend between 1 and 6 weeks old. They will do it on any age, but it's highly recommended to get it done earlier rather than later.
We had the boys done at 6 weeks.... but they were born 5 weeks early, so had a corrected age of one week.

Thanks Gretel, that makes alot of sense.
I'm also shocked at the price. I guess it depends where you go.

I think it depends on the surgeon. Some will only do it under a general after 12 months of age, others will use the plastibell method and can do it at any age.

I'm pretty sure when DS was done, at just under 6 weeks using the plastibell method, it cost around about $360 but obviously that was quite a few years ago now. It was covered by Medicare so I got some of that back.

yes it does depend on the doc. the surgeon that did my son would only do them under 4 weeks old and he let medicare cover the cost cause he believed so highly in getting boys done that he didn't want the cost to stop any one. another doctor i rang up would not do it til my son was 6 months old to old if you ask me the younger the better.
I want it done as early as possible but im having him in november and am now worrying that some of the doctors may go on holiday over that period and I will miss the window

maybe you should ring around and see if you need to book in now and see if they will do it in that period i'm sure they will be willing to help you out
just rang the doctor we are going to go to and everything should be fine! I just need to get my husband to ring up the day after we have our son to book in to make sure
This doctor charges $400. I will get $100 back form medicare with a doctor's referral...how would I go about getting one of those? will they grill me on my reasoning?

Quite possibly. Medicare is provided only for what is termed 'clincally relevant' services - so services for which there is a clinical need, which is why you need referral from a doctor in order to get the Medicare benefit. Some GPs will probably give you a referral quite happily, while others will grill you, probably to see if there is a clinical need. The ones that grill you may be annoying, but it is their job to discuss the pros and cons with you. Perhaps you could ask around before seeing a GP.

After 6 months of age they need to be Put under a General and it needs to be done at a Private Hospital So our total Quote was
$1600
If You Have it done Before 6 Weeks then It will Only Cost You the Doctors fees Because it can be Done In a Doctors Surgery and thats Usualy between
$400 - $500
If You havent Had Your Son Circ by 6 weeks You will find it hard Pressed to find a doctor that will do it before 12 months and in that case it will Cost You the extra $$$$
When Hugh was done last year in the hospital at 3 days old, in Adelaide by a visiting specialist, it was about $200- and then we got some of that back.

They will talk to you but if you are sure of your reasons then there shouldnt be a problem.
The doctor we went to advised he prefers doing them by 6-8wks but being that we were seeing him at 12wks he was quite happy to do so because the plastibell still fit.
This is the main issue when using the plastibell method, that it fits. Which is why they usually say up to 8wks. If the doctor is happy to perform the procedure being that it does fit then there wont be an issue.
We paid $300 - $400 we cant remember anymore !
hi, i have had both our boys done, they say before 6wks of age is better, 1st son was done at 2wks, 2nd son at 5wks, both were done with no complications. as for the cost, i think $300-$400, it has been a while. both were done by Dr Terry Russell.

I haven't read all of the responses, and can't answer on the cost-especially for Australia-but circumcisions are typically done by three methods:
Gomco
Mogen
Plastibell
Googling any of those terms + circumcision + "cost", "method", "procedure", "risks" will give you a good idea of how they differ from eachother.

Medicare does not cover non clinically indicated circumcisions (i.e. all infant circumcision) except for the initial consultation. The "money got back" that has been referred to in some posts refers to the initial consultation.
There have been cases of doctors cheating Medicare by
falsely claiming the boy had phimosis as in this WA study.

Thanks guys.
I contacted a Dr who a bubhubber recommended, called to get costs & got to speak to the dr. He was really nice, explained that he does it of a weekend so the father is there, using the plastibell method. Dad is required to hold the bub while mum goes outside. Takes 4 minutes. He does it between 4-6 weeks. 1st visit is $130 & you get about 1/2 back. The proceedure is $250 & you get about $40 back.
Thanks again to all the ladies that have given me info both here & in PM's :hugs:
wow takes 4 mins and the dad gets to stay in!!! My doc doesnt allow anyone to stay in and he said it will take about 15 mins!
Good Job chicky:smiliedance:

If it takes 4 minutes he's not getting proper anesthetic. A local (injected) Lidocaine takes at least 5 minutes to become effective, and the topical cream (EMLA) is only good for very superficial trauma (like a needlestick), not surgery. Just an FYI...be sure you ask exactly what's being done to minimize pain because it's not uncommon for parents to be told anestetic will be used but just Tylenol or a sucrose (sugar pacifier) is provided.
Jen
I think the 4 mins is the actual prodecure itself , as in the cutting part, as its only the smallest of things.
I think everyone can stay while it takes affect then just leave while the actual circumcision is performed

Hi...
I have just made calls aboutr this today. First real hurddle to overcome is finding a doctor who will do it!
BUT.. finally after many calls found a doctor who charges $410.90 (can get back money on medicare) and the whole procedure will take 15 minutes. They also use local anisectic (did I spell this right).
This doctor likes to do between 2-6 weeks of age... sooner the better as as they get older they need a general anisectic.
Hope this helps.

Just wanted to remind people, that if bub is done before 4 weeks, they can not have panadol etc for ain relief after the proceedure. Just something to think about.

We had DS done at 5 days old and he was fine. It was my b'day and I took him there by myself. He was crying when the Dr brought him back to me.......he settled really quick with HIS Booby LOL. The ring fell off a couple of days after his belly button clamp. The cost was around $300 and we got about $70 back from medicare.
I hope this helps
some places wont do it after 18 months some wont do it after 4 it cost us about $270 but got like 60 back or something!
