I always loved to read the birth stories before Max arrived, so here comes mine....
My ob decided that Max needed to be induced due to a few issues in the previous weeks. I really didn't want to be induced as I had heard that intervention was more likely and although I wasn't worried about forceps, I really didn't want a caesar. I tried everything to get him to come out by himself but had no luck and turned up at the hospital at 5pm. My ob put the gel in and I sent my hubby home as I didn't think anything would happen until the morning. At about 1am I woke up feeling a pop and these intense pains in my tummy. My only regret about the labour is taking the sleeping pill as I was so out of it that it took me a while to realise that the pains were contractions - I was wondering why my tummy hurt so much. They were also nothing like period cramps - way more painful. The pop was my waters breaking and the pains were fairly intense already and lasting for one and half minutes every two minutes - I'd try and move around the room and keep getting stuck as they'd creep up on me so fast. The middie came and checked on me and said I was only one cm and that I'd probably need an epidural as my blood pressure was really high. My ob checked in with her at 2am and agreed that I needed an epi, so I had to give up on my no painkiller plans. I had tried listening to my hypnosis tapes and some other techniques and found them useless anyhow and although disappointed was also secretly relieved to do something about the pain. At about 9am my hubby strolled in all relaxed and was closely followed by my ob. The ob put me on syntocin to speed things up but by 12pm I had only made it to 2cm. By this stage I was in a lot of pain on one side and they'd keep topping up the epi but I couldn't feel my left side and plenty on my right. My ob said he'd give me two more hours and then we'd have to look at other options - ie a caesar. I think he must have turned up the syntocin and the pains after this were horrible and I told my hubby to go and find the ob and cut the thing out of me - I was stuck in the bed because my left leg was numb and could feel all the pain on my right. The ob came back 2 hours later and pronounced me fully dilated and said I could push now or take a half hours break. I had already been taking little pushes as it was the only thing that brought relief and said I'd push. I started pushing and he disappeared again while I focused. I could hear the middies saying to call him again as I was pushing faster than expected for a first time mum and I could feel him moving down. Ob reappeared for the final part and at about 3pm I felt Max slide out. I heard "it's a boy" and he was laid on my chest and it was the most amazing experience of my life. I cannot remember what the pain felt like, just that it hurt. In a way I am glad that the epi didn't work on one side as I felt so empowered feeling myself push him out. I will also be forever grateful to my ob for making me keep going for another couple of hours so that I got the birth I had wanted.
