Only tonight do I finally feel up to talking about this....

Yesterday morning I was changing DS Ethan and I needed a singlet so I asked 3 yr old DS Samuel to get one for me...

Off he tots to Ethans room to fetch said singlet and I continue changing the boy... I hear a loud"ish" crash and crying... doesnt sound too dramatic so I finish wiping Ethans pooey bum then go to check what has happened.....

THE ENTIRE CHEST OF DRAWERS (tall boy) had FALLEN ON TOP OF MY SON !!!!!

Only his head was visible and he was Hysterical :crying:

I went into super hero mum mode and quickly picked up the unit...and I reckon I could have picked that whole unit up with my pinky if necessary...

I was so scared that his body was going to be broken but as I picked up the unit he scambled out...

I checked his body for bruises or sore spots all day and all day today too... he seems ok except for his mouth that was hit by a ceramic money box that was on top of the tall boy... it feel on his face :crying:

I shook for the whole day.... I felt (and still feel) like the worst Mother in the world

It was just such a reminder about how careful we have to be as parents and how quickly something bad can happen....

Sorry for the long post.. was good to get it off my chest ....

These things happen, you're not the worst mother in the world at all :hugs:

So many kids get into dangerous situations and you can't be there 24 hours a day when you have two. I'm so pleased Samuel is ok. Poor little fella :(

You should talk to my MIL about the scrapes that five sons can get into. You'd shudder!

Please don't be hard on yourself. He's okay, and it's not like having a set of drawers is a dangerous risk. It's quite reasonable that you were not watching him while he was getting a singlet.

Ohhhh poor little dude :hugs:
There's no way you'd guess a chest of drawers would come down on him. A very tall bookshelf maybe, but not a chest of drawers.
It must have scared you :hugs:
Glad he is ok

Thats so freaky we had a chest of drawers but only about a metre wide full of cds and that happened but thankfully as it was in the hall way it stopped doing any damage only a broken wrist :(

You dont realise how simple little things can turn into something so dangerous

so glad that his ok :)

You poor thing - that must have been awful, thank goodness Samuel's okay, and that you've recovered.
On another note - isn't it quite exhilarating the sheer power you can obtain when you go into "Mother Lioness" mode? I've been there and after the fact I sat down and thought...
"I am a bloody super hero!"

I agree, you are definitely not the worst mother at all, you are a great mother!:hugs: No matter how superhuman we would all like to be, the fact is we are human and cant forsee every danger and hazard. Accidents do happen, so dont be too hard on yourself. Yes, its very scary and upsetting, but it wasnt your fault. I am so glad that Samuel is ok :hugs:

:hugs: Oh no! Poor Samuel. I'm glad he is ok :hugs:

Don't feel bad, we have had some pretty close calls with things like that...DS pulled the tv off the stand once, not long after DD was born  he jumped out of the way thankfully, and came running up the hall crying (DH & I were still in bed). TV was fine, DS was too scared to go near the tv for weeks tho. We got a bigger TV unit pretty soon after that tho, once that doesn't wobble when a child pulls on it.

:hugs: Accidents happen, you are not the worst mum in the world.

Glad he's ok!

My DS had our very heavy TV fall on him earlier this year when I was having morning sickness, he seemed ok after I got the tv off him (I agree about becomign superwoman to save your child) but I still took him to the Drs as he wouldnt stop crying with all the ususal tricks though he did seem more upset that I didn't put the tv back on before we went to the Drs, like you I was basically shaking for the rest of the day. so I really do understand!

(now to give you some idea of just how heavy our tv is I am 163cms tall and weigh 55kgs so I'm not exactly a very strong person when it comes to that sort of thing. I had to do some fancy maneuvering and use my ingenuity to get the silly thing back into our cabinet I pulled the lounge over next to it, wriggled it up onto that and then moved it on to the back of the lounge then into the cabinet. it might sound funny how I did it but if I didn't do it this way I had no way of getting it up for another 3 days and if I tried it another way I barely got it off the floor)

:

we have our bookcase bolted to the wall....just thought i'd put it in incase others hadn't thought of it. i'm also thinking of bolting the chest of drawers in my room to the wall because they're more like a tall boy , come up to my chest, and could be an accident in the making.

i felt awful yesterday as DS found a mouse trap i had forgotten about and it went off right on his thumb. it was all my fault, and i was so disappointed in myself. but Ds recovered very quickly. poor thing.

Dont worry your not along with this one. I had the same type of incident happen to my DD. Instead of it being the chest of draws it was the T.V that fell on her. Our TV unit shelf gave way, and she happened to be in the path of the TV. She started crying but not hysterically so i didnt think anything of it, thus didn't come to her aid immediately. I felt so bad that i didnt come to her rescue alot sooner. She came out of it fine with out a scatch. I breathed a sign of relief! As the others said, we can't always be there 24/7 watching them. So don't feel bad. :hugs: for you. Take care, I'm glad your son is ok.

Just wanted to say glad your son is ok, and also thanks to you for sharing your experience, I guess its a good reminder to all us mummies about the mischief/ danger our littlies can get into...even the not so obvious things like that! I found it hard just looking after my active DS, but with two now its a little crazy at times...makes me think about checking out all the "dangers" in the house again.

Don't feel bad, accidents *do* happen and even if we think of every little possibility, I don't think you'd stop them from happening completely.

Oh you poor things! My heart jumped just reading about your discovery, never mind actually discovering it! I'm so glad it's all okay.

I won't comment on "mummy muscles" ... after the antenatal appointments, they mean something quite different to me. Flex away, though - it's very good for you! :D

Oh poor lil man! We left ds for a few minutes in the lounge and we heard a crash, when we ran in he had tried climbing the book shelf to get 2 dvds on the top and it had fallen on him!! It is so scary adn you do feel like the worse mum/ dad in the world!!

I am glad he is alright, poor sod.

You are not a bad mother :hugs: So glad to hear he is fine.

Well i was pregnant with DS2, i was in my room and DS1 was watching tv when i heard a BIG crash, came running out and he had pulled the tv untop of himself. I freaked out big time, i was so scared, i raced him to the doctors, but thankfully, he was fine. We had checked the tv so many times, my dad checked it aswell, but somehow, he still pulled it down.

Oh eek, I should probably take that as the kick up the bum I need - I have a large display cabinet full of hippos (not real ones, that could get messy :p , my collection of hippo miniatures. Have I ever mentioned my hippo miniatures? No? Allow me to regale you with an in depth discussion of each and every one of my 400+ collection while you all sit there with your eyes glazing over thinking "please, just shut up!". *ahem* Where was I?)
Oh yeah, I was worrying about my cabinet. It seems to lean forward away from the wall a little bit, I might whinge at He Who Ought to Fix Stuff to do something with it. I would hate for any of my wee ones to get squished but even worse than that, what if one of my hippos broke!!

Ours too. We have a large bookshelf in DS's room which is braced back to the wall and have also replaced our tall TV unit with a more stable one. I always remember the story of a particular football player who's 18 month old pulled the TV onto themselves and didn't survive - that story has always made me paranoid about this sort of stuff.

You can get brackets from your local hardware store and just drill them in.

Glad Samuel's ok Trace! Give him a cuddle for me :hugs: .

I remember it happening to me when I was little. I had a wall unit in my room, with drawers at the bottom and shelves at the top. The shelves at the top were just propped on the drawers. I needed something from the top shelf and climed up. The whole top part fell on top of me  . Dad bolted it to the wall after that.
Don't beat yourself up about it Trace, these things happen.

(And Guv, you seriously crack me up  )

We end up always leaving a place in better condition than when we moved in. Kinda sucks, really

:hugs: Trace!! How scary for you!! I am so glad that Samuel was OK. You know, that's why they call them accidents. There is just no way you could have forseen nor prevented that.

We've all had scary moments where we've berated ourselves, I'm sure. Mine was when I decided to re-fill the nappy stacker after I'd changed Claire's nappy one day (she was probably about 7 or 8 months old at the time) but I left her sitting on top of the change table while I did it. I was honestly no more than half a step away, but had my back to her when I heard a noise & turned, only to see her plunging to the floor! In a panic, I stuck my arm out & caught her one-handed just before she hit the ground, then hauled her (still using only one hand!) back up onto the change table! I thought my knees were going to give way I was shaking so much!!

 That happened to my son last weekend. Except he wanted a book that was on top of the drawers, instead of waiting he pulled open the drawers and climbed them like stairs. The little fella was ok, he was some bad bruises on his leg, arm and a small one on his tummy. He is now scared of the drawers, which in a way is a good thing:devil6:

So glad your your little guy is ok, and you are too:hugs: These things happen to the best of us, so don't feel to badly. My DH keeps telling me this is what its like to be the mother of boys!!
