Just wondering if someone might be able to help me
Sienna has just had tests done and somehow shes managed to become lactose intolerant. Shes 5 months on Sunday and before 2 weeks ago she was on normal formula without a prob. Now we aren't sure if it is a long term thing (it does run in my family) or if she has had gastro and its just a temporary thing.
What I am wondering is when I start her on solids, is there things i should know about baby food in jars? or things she cant eat as it will trigger her diorrhea again.
For any mums who do have lactose intolerant children... is it easy to manage? What things do you recommend i give her?
Thanks in advance for any help

My DD2 was diagnosed at 4/5 months also.. But she had the opposite problem, formula made her constipated, solids made her poos better.
All i tried to do is stay away from food that had milk in them. Like yoghurts.
We now use Lactose Free Milk and still do not eat yoghurt ( even soy / L/free).
It is a bit of trial and error.
Good Luck with it all.

My DS2 was diagnosed with lactose intolerance at 3 weeks of age and my DS3 was diagnosed at 2weeks of age. (DS1 was a booby boy all the way). Both my L I boys had to go on to a L/F formula as breastmilk was going straight through them (as you can imagine).
With jars of food just read the sides. They usually list whether it is free of milk products or not. You can instantly rule out custards. You'll simply need to monitor your little one as time progresses. You can try little bits of dairy products at a time. Try things like cheeses and yoghurts but don't push you luck with milk until you know hoe well she tolerates those things first. My DS2 is now 2years old. He can have regular cow's milk, yoghurts, custards and cheeses BUT in moderation. You can tell when you've overdone it by the consistency of his poos. If you little gets sick though - particularly with gastro - avoid all milk products again for at least 1-2 weeks after she has gotten better or you'll seriously regret it.
It is VERY easy to manage. You can buy lots of products these days to help get you through.

Hi,
Our DS2 is lactose intolerant and has just turned 1 .... up to now I have given him no cows milk products but have used the lactose free yoghurt which he loves (Vallia). Also a soy cheese. The only jar foods we used were the jellys - otherwise just gave him meat and vege. He can tolerate cheese which we have just started to introduce and I guess now it will be trial and error until we see how much/what he can tolerate. I haven't really found it hard at all. I just use the UHT lactose free milk for cooking etc.
Good luck.

We have a similar problem. DD is 11 months old and was diagnosed as being lactose intolerant a month ago. It looks at this stage as though it is possibly a temporary thing that was triggered by a bout of gastro 2 months ago. We have her on LF formula at the moment and will probably keep her on that for another few weeks before introducing some lactose again and seeing what happens. Interestingly, she seems to be putting on heaps of weight on the LF formula, not a bad thing as she needed to fill out a bit, but I am wondering if the lactose free formula has extra sugar added or something? Sorry didnt mean to hijack there!

Lactose intolerance is often outgrown as the baby gets older but I would try to avoid it because exposure to an allergen can increase the allergy in some instances.
When you start her on solids, can you make your own baby food? I've never used jarred foods and it is so simple! You know exactly what is going into them and it's great peace of mind. Check out this page for some ideas. http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/
It really is as easy as steaming veggies and pureeing them (and freezing) or giving them straight to your baby so they can tackle it themselves!

I have had my bub on LF formula since she was 7 wks old. For her first 7 weeks she scream all day with colic...but i sensed there was something else. DD has has been f/f since basicall day 2. i researched the net and thought her symptoms sounded like she had an intolerance to lactose.....so after many cans of different formulas on xmas evee 2006 we put her on the lactose free stuff.....she settled down and has been fine since. when she was about 5 mths i think it was, i tried putting back on normal formula but she became unsettled again. After putting on the formula i did go see our lovely dr and she said that it was fine and that she probably just has an immature tummy....and to leave it down the track before reintroducing the normal stuff. Bub is fine with custards but doesnt seem to like yogurts. tonight we are going to start slowly introducing the normal formula back into her diet over a number of weeks. She eats all kinds of fruitsandveges. She is healthy and has maintained the 97th percentile since birth! so heres hoping she dosn't have true intolerance:fingerscrossed:
Hi,
there's a brand called "only" organic that has no dairy or other major allergens in it. It's available from the big supermarkets. Also check out the choice website www.choice.com.au (http://www.choice.com.au) under their babies & kids section. They have some really good advice on other pre-packed baby foods that are suitable.
Some babies can also handle yoghurt because the lactose is totally different - my little boy can.
Good luck:wave:

Hi,
My 2 youngest (11mths and 10yrs) both have & have and had lactose intolerance in the early years. My 10yr old went from breast at 11mths to cows milk formula at 12 mths - didn't agree with him (continually congested, mucky cough, runny nose, nebulisers, steroids in conjunction with ventolin etc. - he's not asthmatic?) to soy milk (muckiness and chest problems cleared up?) until he was approx 2yrs old. From then, he never had a problem with cows milk. I think we will do the same for our 11mth old though he has jars of custard that contain cows milk and has never reacted? It's really hard to know. I did introduce it slowly in food such as cereal, custard and veges. It seems to be that the more people you speak to, the more children have problems with cows milk/formula become apparent? Maybe it's just too much for their little digestive systems??? The older they get, the stronger and more resilient they get?
Good luck with whatever you decide to do!
Sar :)

My DS has (hopefully) temporary lactose intolerance following a long bout of gastro. My Dr suggested Lacteeze which are drops or tablets. They are non-prescription. The drops go in the formula to break down the lactose before you give it. The infant tablets, you crush and dissolve in a bit of water, place on bubs tongue, before giving foods or formula with lactose. They have their own website. Just google. Probably best to consult with your doctor though first.

They do a stool test. You get to collect baby's pooh in two different containers. One is to be frozen, the other fresh. THey then test them both for reducing proteins or something.
DD2 has LI and was diagnosed aprox 3 months? Shes been on LF formula since then on prescription. I have tried ordinary formula recently, but it only lasted a week before symptoms started again.
