Hi my little baby is using a haberman teat by Medela as he has a poor suck, he also has down syndrome so breastfeeding at the moment is out.

What teats have you found work for reducing wind.
please any suggestions regarding reducing the amount of wind he swallows will be appreciated. I can hear him gulping the air down, we burp him a few times in feed. his lip seal around the teat is poor as well

I found the pigeon teats to be the best, they are nipple like and very soft. I also started with the Haberman, but could never get the flow right at nighttime, the variable flow lines were so hard to find! Pigeon teats fit avent bottles if you already have them and I have never had any problems with wind with them.

I must agree that I found the Pigeon variable flow teats to be wonderful. The flow adjust to suit how hard they suck. I usually buy mine from the chemist.

HI there - One of the bubs in our group has Downs syndrome and had similar feeding issues - she swears by Dr Browns bottles.

I think you can get them at certain chemists but there is a website that tells you a little more about them http://www.handi-craft.com/ or an AUstralian site http://www.natureschild.com.au/products/dr_browns_oestrogen_free_feeding_bottles/432/1

They are also estrogen free- which I found interesting.

Hope this helps! I had also had/have a very wind gulpy baby - and found very early on was the collapsable bags/ bottles were great - they are by avent and available at almost all chemists

Good luck :)

Oh oh oh. I'm so excited!!!!! My little girl has ds too!!!! Sorry but there isn't anyone else here but me with that exact same experience!!

My Emily had no sucking reflex too, we were told to use the avent bottles but they were hopeless and we went to ordinary teats. But what I did was loosen the screw cap a little so that air could get in and not create a vacuum. It was also easier for her get milk and she wasn't getting so tired. It is hard work but what else can you do? I also had to give her extra tongue and cheeck stimulation to make her suck, feeding used to take on average an hour:eek: .

Hope we can chat some more and hope I have helped you out.
Where are you located? We are in Sydney.
You can pm me anytime about anything.
Take care, kris.

I found the Pigeon Peristaltic (sp?) teats to be the best for wind and easier for sucking.

Thanks everyone i got a pigeon teat today and didn't have any success. I love the teat it's great but Aden just didn't like it the nipple was a bit sort, probably because the Haberman teat is so long. he's feeding well with the Haberman now but the amount of wind is terrible. My mum is getting me a Dr browns teat over the net, so will give this a go. I really thought that the pigeon one would work when I seen it. I brought 3 two are still in the chemist bag sealed so they should refund them.

Emys mum I'm so glad your hear I don’t have much time at the moment I'm in Blackwater but would still love to get in touch with you. I will PM you soon.
I dont know who wrote this poem but wanted to share it with you, my sister sent it to me. i hope it's ok to use someones poem in this way.

A Very Special Child

A meeting was held, quite far from Earth
“It’s time again for another birth”
Said the Angels to the lord above,
“This special child will need much love”

So lets be careful where he’s sent
We want his life to be content
Please, lord, find the right parents who
Will do this special job for you.

They will not realise right away
The leading role their asked to play
But with this child sent from above
Comes stronger faith and richer love

And soon they’ll know the privilege given
In caring for this gift from Heaven
Their precious son, so meek and mild
Is heavens very special child.

I have read that one a thousand times and I still llove it. I have posted another poem on the "parents of special needs children" forum, have a read it's really nice.

Would love to hear your story and see some pics of the baby.
I found that when Emily was a baby that the wide neck teats didn't work as she needed to work too hard to get milk and couldn't seal her mouth around it properly making her very frustrated and windy. I have no experience with the teat you are using but can I ask if it creates a vacuum in the bottle itself? So when he is drinking does the teat collapse or when he stops sucking does alot of air rush into the bottle? If this is happening, try loosening the lid just a tiny bit so that when he is sucking air is coming in the side, do you know what I mean?

Hope to hear from you soon.

The bottle dose fill with air but it needs to be tight or it leaks. With the wide teat we found the same problem Aden’s lips couldn't seal around it. I shouldn't complain really as Aden never cries from wind pain, he never really cry's at all.
How can I send you photos of Aden?
Hopefully I will have his birth story finished tomorrow.
I have posted on the Breastfeeding site ABA forum part of his birth story under general the Aden's birth.

Wish I had more time. Do you have your DD birth story posted here ?

Cathy, you can Email me if you like.

I have not posted Emily's full birth story here, to be honest it wasn't a very good birth and came with alot of complications and the hospital where she was born didn't really agree with me keeping her and the should've given me an emergency c-sect but they let her get VERy distressed and her heart rate fell to 52 and the cord was wrapped areound her neck twice. She was born blue and not breathing, had apgar score of 2 or was it 1 I can't remember exactly.
That hospital hasn't been very nice to me because of my decision to not kill her when I found out she had ds while preg.
Anyways, I'll tell you more another time and hopefully we will get to know each other well soon.

As I have said before, you can pm me or email me anytime you like.
I will chech out the ABA site and look for his story.

Take care,
Kris.
