Well as you know Oska got off to a very rocky start.... obviously a very abbreviated version but here goes!
I went into labour very late on sunday night but ignored it thinking it was just tightening and a what not I was convinced I was going to be induced. Through the night things got more regular and I woke up regularly I was wondering if this was it, turns out it was. Woke Benny up and asked him to ring hospital, I was sure I was going to get sent home so was trying to put it off for as long as I could. We left for hospital at 6.30 and I lost my plug just before I left and then my waters broke on the way to the hospital. Oska was a big bub and had to be vacuum dleivered and I needed an episitomy. I was so overwhelmed after the birth it was the best thing I have ever experienced, you all know what I mean. I layed there holding my slimy bub for ages while getting stitched up.
After the birth we went to our room and had a great first night, and friends and family began to visit. Oska was only 24hours old when the Dr came and said he thought something was wrong and that was the last time I would hold my bub for a while, and a long while before I would see him without lots of tubes, drips and monitors. We were transferred from the private to the base, and then the royal flying doctors sent a retrival team from brisbane to get Oska, I was told I would fly with him but when they got there I was told I couldn't so this began the first of many nights to come where I would be seperated from him. He flew and Ben and I followed close behind on the next flight out of cairns. We arrived in Brisbane and Oska was in intensive care and was already being seen by cardiologists. His arms were splinted and had 3 IV's breathing tubes and was on life support and heavy sedation. I cannot describe how awful this was to see him like that. They performed a procedure that morning which was effective only for a few days but bought us a little more time. We needed to be transferred to another hospital, after over a week they transferred us. He was operated on when he was 11 days old and had open heart surgery, so he has the big zipper scar down his tiny chest but that is the least of his worries.
He came through the surgery and recovered well, again the hardest thing I can imagine, seeing him like that and hearing the pained cries, I dont know how we all did it he is a little trooper and Ben and I stayed strong for each other. I look back and think how did we do it, those bad days were so bad! I finally got to room in with him and finally got to breast feed and it was fantastic, albeit very difficult with all the leads, wires, IV's etc. But we got there.
I am now finally home with my little man and he is an absolute delight. Through all this we relocated from Cairns to Newcastle, thankfully our house narrowly missed being flooded (it lapped the front door neighbours told us). Oska has just be amazing I can not believe what he has been through already, there is more to come with major corrective surgery in the near future 6mths-18mths.
The health system might be in a bad way but the care that he received was fantastic the doctors and nurses were magic. I will never complain about paying tax again! It is gut wrenching to see so many sick bubs and kids in the intensive care units, but its great to see them running around the halls waiting to be discharged.
Sorry for it being so long! Might not be around the hub as often as I used to be I am too busy baby gazing.
I hope everyone is going well and everyone is really happy.:) :)
Take Care.
