View Full Version : When was your catheter inserted?
Was your catheter inserted before the spinal/Epidural or after the anesthetic had kicked in?
Did it hurt if you had it put in before?

After. Didn't hurt, I didn't feel a thing or even realise what they were doing. The initial kick from the epidural made me very very happy :)
It was an odd sensation when it was removed but not painful or even uncomfortable.
i always thought they waited intil the spinal/epi, so u didnt feel it go in, but ive been told they are going to do it in the maternity ward before they send me up to theatre

i requested it to be put in after spinal anesthetic was put in .i got heads up from my mum whos a middie to ask as she said its horrible when they do it b4 hand... It gets done b4 hand mostly when ur having a c/s as the theatre staff dont like doing those sorts of jobs and its a hassle

after they put in the spinal, but not long after, I could feel it, but not pain

It was inserted after the epi both times for me. Didn't feel a thing.
And i agree with the odd sensation when it was taken out, very strange

I didn't have a C-sec but I had an Epi, and it was inserted after the epi. I couldn't feel a thing.

Mine was put in before the Epidural went in. I had a vaginal delivery. It didn't hurt per say but it wasn't comfortable, either. Hate catheters.. blech!

I had it before. It didn't hurt going in, just uncomfortable, but it did hurt a bit coming out the next day

Mine was put in about 1/2 hour before I was anywhere near theatre. It hurt, and I cried (not soley because of how it felt, but that certainly didn't help).
BEG for it AFTER. I never want to have another c-sec, but if I HAVE to, I'll be demanding it goes in AFTERWARDS.
I had it before but I was already in full blown labour, probably in transition, and had a full bladder I couldn't empty on my own. I was in so much pain that it didn't hurt. In fact I hardly noticed it at all. I had the epidural once I was 10cm and they realised my son was stuck. We went to theatre after that.

After here too. No dramas at all, going in or coming out.
I had an epi with my first, and never had a cathedar at all

I didn't have an epi (or any other pain killers), but I did have a catheter (sp?)..They put it in after the virginal birth of my baby and I don't remember even noticing it...it was uncomfortable coming out though but so quick it was nothing to worry about...:p

This needed to be a multiple option poll hehe ive had both.. before and after
for my fisrt two csects both were emergency and they inserted it BEFORE the spinal was done.. I hated it so much it had me in tears :S So third time around I made sure to put it in my birth plan that they do it AFTERWARDS, they told me it was standard practice to do it before and tried to talk me out of it but no way.. I got it done afterwards and it was absolutely brilliant.. I didnt even know they'd done it hehe
So they cant refuse doing it after the spinal if thats what i want? i was also told it is standard practice to be done before, but i am a private patient in a public hospital for the day of the c/s and paying for it, i should be respected i think
they put mine in after..I dont remember them doing it I didnt feel it at all!
after for both of mine :)
both times mine were put in before, it didn't hurt but it was uncomfortable.

I had mine put in after the spinal block and I was relieved that it was removed before I hit recovery. I had my C/S at 11.15am and got up out of bed to pee at 6pm. I asked the midwife when I was wheeled back to my room from recovery if I had a catheter in (I was a bit scared about having it taken out cause I heard it can really hurt) and she said without looking no, she then had a look and confirmed it had been removed in theatre she explained it was a personal preference my ob has as he felt it encouraged a speedy recovery as I was in a position where I had to get out of bed and get moving - which was fine with me! Even after a vaginal birth it took around 5 - 6 hours to get sensation back in my bladder and feel the need to go to the toilet so for me no different for a C/S
