We ventured through our first weekly grocery shop on saturday since finding out about Matilda's allergies. What an experience. You truly do not realise just how many products contain certain ingredients. Things I would never have thought contain them . .did!!

So Ive got veges and chicken and fruit to give Matilda. I did some reading and found her some snacks too. But honestly, half the time, I just dont know what to give her.

She's a shocking eater to begin with. And I mean it seriously. I often wonder if she is getting everything she needs. I think thats a big portion about why I am still breastfeeding her. We have cut down a lot on them during the day to try and encourage her solids. But its not working.

She'd rather snack. And I know thats fine but its also very messy as she'd rather run around with teh food in her mouth. Or I shove it in there as we go. She is learning to feed herself and I bought her a suction cup bowl so she can try.

Im going to try her on some soup and make some rice. But what else can I give her?

I need ideas. Truly. What can I give her for breakfast and lunch and dinner. Sometimes its easy as she can have what we are having but other times she needs something different.

I dont know what to give her. I find myself standing in the kitchen at a complete loss.

What do you feed your allergy sufferers??

is jelly ok? I made up some jellies the other day (only red ones) and Abby loves them but only sometimes but i just thought quick and easy snack and you can take it with you! Mind you she will only eat the red ones!

You didnt put in your OP but these are the allergies Matilda has:

*Egg
*Soybean
*Dustmites
*Peanuts
*Milk

Oh hun there is supposed to be a story on today tonight tonight about a mum who is making allergy free fast foods or something so definately watch that!! No idea if it will help or not but I thought of you when I saw the ad!

How about dried fruits? or you know those mixed pack of frozen berries I get Abs? could she have those? They will help with the pooping aspect too but blueberries dont make nice nappies just a warning!

Im going to google to find some ideas!

Mainly this post is just crapping on so I can bump it up for others to see it:laughing:

Oh Krisseh, thats interesting. All these things are things that I won't be introducing to bubby until after he is 2 anyway. I don't know that its because of an allergy though, just that most babies have a low tolerance of these things. I read that somewhere when I was just about to introduce solids, I have no idea where I saw it sorry.

Do you think Matilda will grow out of these sensitivities? What did the doctor say (sorry, you probably posted it somewhere).

Is she okay with wheat? so she can have bread?

And also, thats why I intend to breastfeed for ages too, so I know he's getting something into him even if he turns out to be picky!

Good luck.

I've never heard of people holding off dairy till after 2 years. After 12 months yes. Also most commercial breads contain one of the things that Matilda is allergic to.

Sorry hun, no idea's here. Maybe just lots of rice/pasta, meat & veg for dinner. You need a bread maker for home (excuse to go shopping). Lots of fruit.

Makes it hard :hugs:

This recipe I found is for cookies I think it is ok but you have a look. Rice milk is fine for Matilda isnt it??

1 cup of brown sugar
1/2 cup of white sugar
1/3 cup oil
1 banana, mashed
3 tablespoons of soy or rice milk
1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups of flour
2 teaspoons of cinnamon
1 teaspoon of baking soda
1/2 teaspoon of salt
2 1/4 cups quick oats
½- 1-cup raisins or dried cranberries or chocolate chips

Directions:

Cream the brown sugar, white sugar and oil. Add the banana, vanilla and soy milk. Mix dry ingredients in separate bowl. Combine wet and dry ingredients. Add raisins/cranberries/chocolate chips. Drop by tablespoon onto cookie sheet.
Bake at 350 degrees for 13-15 minutes or until edges are browned.

Makes about 3 dozen cookies

Thanks you guys!!:hugs:

Its tough at first. You honestly have no idea just home many things contain those ingredients. I mean nearly every bread had soy flour in it or if something was dairy free they usually chucked in soy milk instead! :banghead: Even salami sticks! Sheesh!!

I found a really good health food shop and the lady showed this one section that has so many things. Cookie mix and cake mix and there cool cartoon character chocolate cookies that dont have any allergens in them. Think Im about to start visiting there a lot more!!

Shed -> She may grow out of them. Im not sure. Doctor said I need to get her retested about 3. Considering up until that point Id never known about any of them but the peanuts!! He actually told me that I had to cut them out as having them through my breastmilk could make her MORE sensitive!

Just a word of warning on the raisins or dried fruits - a lot of them are processed in the same places as nuts, so I'd avoid the bought ones, but I think it is Sunbeam that make a food dehydrator - you can make your own dried fruit!! We'll probably get one when Lily is old enough to be eating stuff like that. We'll also get a breadmaker and make our own mix at home.

There is also a good website that sells certified 'free' foods for gluten, egg, nut, wheat, dairy allergies. I can't remember what it is called, but I've posted it under the anaphylaxis thread. A lot of the stuff they sell you can buy at Coles or Woolies, but it is a good source of info.

Also check out Anaphylaxis Australia, as they post food alerts on a regular basis. I don't know if Matilda has ana or not, but it is still a really good source of info. They also sell recipe books and kids books to help educate your little one about their allergies.

You can make a lot of things yourself.

Yeah takes time etc but at least then you know whats in them ! I do this with Boof's snacks ( biccies, muffins ) then just replace the milk with rice milk.

PM Tisme cause her kids have allergies & she has a few different recipes etc. She may not be around for a bit but she will get back to you !

I was advised to keep DD#1 off dairy till after two on account of Eczema.

We did it, and she's now 16, with no eczema.

Then I was told with DD#2 that thinking had changed, and that dairy is OK, so we didn't restrict it.....and she has Eczema.

DS not getting any dairy, already has eczema, and is a big fan of the boob at 18 months still. He will not have any dairy till at leat 2, and I'm trying to work out what sets his eczema off. It seems to be synthetic clothes esp polar fleece.

I feed him mostly what we all eat, plus of course he gets his breastmilk on demand. I use Oat milk in cooking, melrose gold spread in baking or on sandwiches. Polenta is a good addition to their diet - either "sweet" with unsweetened stewed fruit, or savoury with a casserole or veg. If you want cakes etc, look for vegan recipes on google. I made a nice vegan choc brownie slice a few weeks ago, based on apple puree.

Hi there

My DS1 is allergic to cows milk and has outgrown a soy milk allergy, we also avoid peanuts for now.....

I find cooking for him fairly easy. I just use normal recipes and replace milk with rice milk or oat milk (or even a water if there isnt much in the recipe - it doesnt make much difference to the taste). I also use Nuttelex instead of butter. Cheese is the hardest thing but you can leave it out of most things (except for pizza and lasagne)......

I am not so sure on the egg thing but I have heard using olive oil can sometimes do the same job?

Good luck, I can dig out some recipes if there is anything in particular you are after.
