I had an induction, 10 hours of labour, distressed bub, trial of forceps and eventual emergency caesarian for my first bub, and was hoping for a VBAC this time around. Bubba was breech at 36 weeks, but had turned back at 38, so it was looking good! My doctor didn't want to induce me this time as he feels that's what caused a lot of the problems with my first labour, and I was happy to avoid that too! So as my due date approached and passed, he booked me in for a caesarean at 41 weeks.
I had been having uncomfortable BH for a couple of weeks, so when they started up again on Sunday night (40 +5), I paid very little attention to them. However, in the space of 20 minutes, they were more like painful and rather close together! My hubby suggested we start timing them, and they were 5 min apart lasting for 50-55 sec. I thought I better call the hospital to see when they wanted me, and they told me to come straight in.
My parents were staying with us, so I went out and told them, and that's when the contractions really started to become painful. My Dad looked so worried, it was so sweet. My Mum just looked excited and kept asking if she could do anything for me, and poor hubby was left lumping everything to the car by himself! I think he was quietly excited that he had good reason to speed and run red lights, and we are about a 25 min drive from the hospital.
When we arrived at the hospital the contractions were coming thick and fast, and much closer then 5 min. The midwife checked, and I was 6 cm dilated! My waters hadn't broken, but she assured me that bub wasn't far away.
The labour was completely different to my first, much more intense. The midwife said to let her know when I needed to push, and that to believe in what my body was doing. She was great! She suggested I change positions, and it was when I was kneeling that my waters broke. Hubby was fantastic, doing everything I asked and not annoying me at all! When my OB arrived, I was already pushing on my knees, and he suggested that I go on my back and put my feet on his and the midwife's hip. I was too out of it to argue, so over I went. Feeling her head crowning was so seriously painful, but I could feel her moving further down with each contraction. The midwife brought a mirror over so I could have a look, but it made me lose my concentration, so I just went back to closing my eyes and hollering like a woman possessed with each contraction :) I remember reading in all these books that the head of the baby is born, then they turn them to get the shoulders out, etc...but she just about flew out! They put her on my belly, and she was just perfect. Hubby got to cut the cord, and to tell me that she was a girl (we already knew though), and it was just lovely. I then got stitched up (ouch! Ouch ouch ouch!) after my placenta came out, and i got lots of nice cuddles with my girl, while hubby checked out the doctor's needle-work skills!
I was bleeding a fair bit post-delivery, and there was talk of taking me to theatre, but thank goodness we didn't end up there. We got back to the ward at around 5am, where she had a fantastic breastfeed, and I got about 30 min sleep! It was such a different experience, being able to move and have a shower straight away, unlike after my caesar! While my stitches were sore, the added mobility and not feeling drugged out for a few days were definaetly worth it! And Jessamy breastfed much better from the start, and I think that may have had something to do with a natural, drug-free birth as opposed to a caesarean.
Well, that's enough carry on from me! Thanks for reading, and good luck to everyone trying for a VBAC, they are beautiful, special, amazing things
