Just wondering if anyone knows what the chances are of twins when there is a family history... My FIL is a twin and people keep telling me that I could have twins because of this... Have also been told that it skips a generation and since FIL didn't have twins, does that mean DH is more likely too???

Thanks in advance

Sorry if this is in the wrong spot...

The thought of twins scares me. My mum's a twin, i've got twin cousins, another cousin has twins - thats my side. THEN DH's brother has twins, his cousins are twins, his cousin had twins.

Too much of a risk for us :o

There is only 1 set of twins on my side (that I know of) and thats my mums cousin...

I have always wanted twins but after DS, I know it would be hard.. It is hard enough with just one baby...

My MIL is a twin and I worried about having twins when I first fell pregnant.

Have to say, I wouldn't mind it, lots of work, but double the fun eh? :)

Highly unlikely anyways, at the moment I'd just be really really really happy with one more...(pretty please)

I have twin brothers, twin uncles, my grandfather was one of a set of triplets (the other two died, birth complications :() and he had twin sisters!

Apparently there's twins in DH's family too, and I'd LOVE twins!

my gp told me if there is no history in chicks family - chances are about 1 in 80, if there is history chances are about 1 in 8. non identical twins are hereditry, identical twins are chance. don't know how true this is but that's what he told me!

Okay, correct me if I'm wrong (nothing new! :) )
Twins can't be hereditary through the fathers side, because he has nothing to do with it. It's either identical twins, which are a fluke, or fraternal twins which means the mothers body has released more than one egg at O time, right? Which would have nothing to do with the father.
Just off topic, I saw a show on Foxtel where this woman has had three pregnancies and gotten three sets of twins  They are 6, 4 and 5 months! Crazy!

I gave birth to twins almost 3 months ago. There has never been any history of twins on my side but my husbands cousins are twins. My twin boys are fraternal therefore i dropped two eggs. I heard it does skip a generation. My OB told me that it would come from me since i dropped two eggs, she figured i have a good ovulation system going.

To this day i am still dumbfounded

Yep, I heard the same. It descends through the maternal line and tends to skip a generation. So it makes no difference that your FIL was a twin, but if your mum's mum had twins then there's a higher chance you will.

But in my family it didn't work out like that. My maternal grandmother was a twin wo according to the "rules" my mum or her sister should have had twins but neither did. And neither did I nor my only female cousin on that side.

We've got twins on my dad's side - maternal and paternal likewise with my mum's side.
PLUS my partner is a twin and her family has a history of twins.

You're a brave man Sh3lby, having kids in a situation like that ;) .

I was going to say what mim said.....:)

Yep, mim is right. My MIL and FIL are both non identical twins, so we thought we may be blessed and bewildered with twins, but unless its a fluke conception, it generally is only genetic in the mother.

Yep, it's all to do with the ovaries & nothing to do with the sperm. Identical twins are when one egg is fertilised then splits giving both halves identical DNA, and (like the others said) fraternal is the mother producing 2 ovum that both get fertilised, basically giving you ordinary siblings just born at the same time!

I have a strong chance of twins according to my family history! My maternal grandmother had 2 sets of fraternal twins (from 9 kids!) and my fathers aunties were twins too! None of my cousins on my mums side have had them yet though!

Everyone says I'm mad wanting them but my half-brothers aunty had them first up, then a lone boy later. She said it's easier with twins because they kept each other company, whereas Thomas was a lot harder!?!!

Thanks everyone... I thought that was the case but wasn't sure... You know when people tell you things over and over, they make you reconsider what you had thought..

I guess if I am going to have twins, it is all up to my wonderful little eggs...

I have 9 month old twins and I was excited from day one of finding out! they are now starting to play with eachother, giggle at each other and hug eachother. Its the best thing in the world to watch.

Depends what kind of twins they are doesn't it?

I was carrying twins with Bella but we miscarried early.
I had no idea there were twins in my family and later found out my grandmothers mother had twins and noone has had twins except me since then (unless they m/c too)
