Hi everyone,
Just wondering if there are any parents out there with kids that have Chronic Lung Disease.
DD2 has it because she was very prem. She gets colds & flus worse then any of us & when she does she ends up in hospital for days-weeks. She is in the childrens hospital now & was last in there in March this year & july last year. Just wondering what you do to try & stop colds/flus etc & when your child is sick is there anything you do to stop them getting worse. She doesnt respond to asthma preventatives or treatments at all. I have ventalin for her & the hospital always give her ventalin but it never ever works or helps. The only thing the specialists have recommended is flu shots for the whole family. But besides that (we are going to have them) is there anything else?

Thanks in advance!

- The number one thing you can do is handwashing.
- Perhaps there are some natural therapies you could use as well, like echinacea.
- If people are sick and want to visit, be firm and say no.
- I have a cousin with a similar thing and she's on antibiotics all the time.

If you're over-clean her immune system won't be as strong and she'll get sicker more often. But if you're not careful enough then she'll get sick. :hugs: to you.

Good luck.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. Antibiotics dont work for my daughter, cos her cold & flus are viral infections not bacterial & antibiotics dont help with her chronic lung disease. She has holes in her lungs so when she is sick they collapse & she cant breathe properly & needs oxygen.
We are quite strict in who we let visit when people are sick, but its also hard to keep her away from every sick person. Especially at kinder. But whenever we have colds i make sure i disinfect areas around the house to get rid of the germs so it doesnt keep coming back, but i'm more interested in how when she is sick to help with her breathing so it doesnt get that bad that she ends up in hospital. Like i said she doesnt respond too any asthma medications or preventatives.
Maybe there is nothing else that we can do besides be careful.

Hi, my daughter also have chronic lung disease, she came off oxygen in October. We have the same problem she is sick every couple of weeks. I do the same and don't let people come over that are sick etc. Like you we have no real solution to the problem.
I just wanted to wish you all the best and let you know you are not alone.

Does a vaporiser work? DS#1 gets croup. I know it's not the same thing but I wonder if that works.

Have you spoken to your paed about it? And what do they say?

Shajake - No unfortunately vapourisers dont work either. She has nebulizers in hospital & ventolin & everything they can think off & nothing helps except oxygen. My paed. thinks they she should be put on a asthma preventative. Which i dont really know if that would work or help because asthma medications dont work or help with her breathing. We have just started trialing the preventative so i spose we will see if it helps or not.
