Hi all you informed people, I am after some help because I have run out of useful google searches.

My 4mth old son has had runny, watery frothy poo and occasional blood almost from the word go. I took myself off dairy at about 6 weeks but didnt realise sheep and goat milk were likely to have the same effect. I got really strict about 'no milk protein' (ie goat, sheep, cow) after my 8 week check - my paed was excellent and the fact my dad is milk protein sensitive encouraged him to tell me 'stricly no milk products'.

So that went well for a while.

The, three weeks ago (after 7-8 weeks 'all good') he got really bad explosive runny BRIGHT green poo. It came every two hours and woke him up crying, screaming etc. Its slowly become every 3-4 hours but its still quite green. Very occasionally we get a nice orangy one to get me excited, but then he goes back to green and crying.

Ive tried one breast and spacing his feeds to avoid 'hindmilk/foremilk' issues but it makes no difference.

I am holding off putting myself on an elimination diet as it seems weird that he WAS fine... can you just develop 'extra' sensitivity.

Having said that I have cut back on the sugar as I found myself binging all the time. This is abotu two days ago.

Any ideas? Time to take away all the other good stuff frrm my diet?

I'd appreciate any help!

:)

How about Soy? Many Dairy allergic kids can have strong reactions to Soy Products as well.

He does sound like he has a gut related concern and possible allergy (blood in his stools). Frothy does sound lactose related, but as you have gone off the dairy, then that negates that theory. Frothy stools can indicate lactose issues, bad stools in general can be Cow's Milk Protein allergy (Lactose and CMA being two different issues, but both related to animal milk products).

Mmm, all I can think of is either wheat or gluten (also a gut related allergy or intolerance) or soy products.

It does take about 6 weeks for an elimination diet to work when breastfeeding (I've been on one). But then, how did things go around the 6 week mark, and what did you replace things with? If you replaced it with a lot of soy, perhaps or another potential allergen? I have heard of a woman whose child reacted to the replacement foods and built up a new sensitivity (in her case nuts. She was eating a lot for the benefits that they have if on a vegan or high elmination style diet).

Perhaps a chat to your Paed to see about a referral for more testing? That is a tricky one. He really will need to be looked at again and tested more in depth. If you do go onto an Elimination Diet, a visit to a good Nutritionist is great.

I am rambling and throwing ideas around here :)

I am sure that there will be others here with some great info. :)

I forgot to mention that I took soy out too - on the advice of my paediatrician who mentioned 30% of bubs allergic to milk protein are allergic to soy. Sorry.

You touched on what I was worried about - that over compensating with other foods might trigger another allergy. I certainly have been gettign into the nuts - chasing fat substitutes with no milk products in my diet.

I really did have massive sugar cravings and could knock back a bag of Natural Confectionary Company snakes in an afternoon. My GP asked about my fructose consumption... so Ive held back.

For WHATEVER reason, this morning he has had lovely yellow poos and been such a relaxed baby. Now I need to work backwards...

I am conscious I havnt eaten much egg in the last few days too. My cousin has milk protein and egg whie allergies.

Thanks a LOT for your response. Its good to brain storm. My mother thinks I am 'neurotic' and that I am creating more problems by being 'uptight' about food. GRRRRRRRRRR.
