View Full Version : Erythema nodosum
I am looking for anymore information on Erythema nodosum. Anything would be good.
DS1 has been diagonsed with Erythema nodosum. The doctor thought it was caused by the ear infection he had during the week. However, DS1 now has new spots/bumps coming up. He was improving, his ear infection has gone, all the spots were improving but now he has a heap more on his legs!!! Any information anyone has on this skin condition would be greatly appreciated - espically about whether this is normal for him to be getting more spots/bumps.
Thanks

Thanks Kristy :hugs:. We went to the doctors today, and got some more answers, thankfully its not too serious. Was just frustrated and scared last night.

My sister had this as a teenager. I know how scary those big lesion/bruise/lump things look so wanted to send you some :hugs: But rest assured with the right diagnosis and medication it all goes away as quickly as it came. Just be aware that you may need to be cautious with any future ear infections with your son now. My sister has to be very careful of any broken skin as her problem lies with the strep virus. Hope your little guy is feeling much better soon.
Thanks Karen - just hope its sooner rather then later!! COME ON BUB!!
happymama, thanks for that. We read that it is more common in teenage girls! Can I ask how long they lasted for? Does she still get them?

I think she has had one here and there since then but NOTHING like the original outbreak where she was covered in them. I remember being horrified when they started coming up. I think they lasted a week or so but I could ask her if you want some more info. I know they started to go away quite quickly once they had her on the right medication. They didnt leave any lasting marks or anything which is wonderful news.

Just wanted to add that if you cant see them improving and you arent happy I wouldnt hesitate to go back to the drs as he may need a different ab or perhaps there is something else going on that has been missed. I am sure you would feel that same way as me in that you can never be too careful with these precious little ones. I hope he is starting to improve today. I know in my sister it was actually caused by her own bodies antibodies to the strep virus so maybe he is getting more as his body is fighting off the ear infection and once this is totally gone the bumps will all disappear? Im by no means an expert here so I could be way off the mark but fingers crossed they will start to settle down now he is over the infection.:fingerscrossed:

You are right, that is what the doctor said too. Hopefully his ear infection will clear up soon, and so do the spots.
Thank you - they are horrible things, and seeing him in pain and not wanting to walk is awful. Yet other then the antibiotics for his ear infection and panadol there isn't much I can do. :( He is a lot better today. :fingerscrossed: he stays that way.

HI again jkat,
Just wanted to add some more quickly after speaking to my sis today. She was actually treated with Prednisone when she had EN so if you are not satisified with how your son is travelling over the next few days maybe u could discuss this option with your dr. In saying that my sis did say that it took a good couple of weeks for her lesions to disappear because they are essentially a big bruise so like any other capillary damage they take time to heal. She did say though that it was of major concern if they started to appear over the 'body' rather than the limbs as they can be quite dangerous around the heart. So keep a watch closely on DS for that and if you do have any doubts go straight back in. U can never be too careful right. And the good news I have for u is that as you know this illness is very rare but it is probably even more rare that DS would get it twice so you can rest a little easier there.
Sending you some real BIG :hugs: mama I am sure you really need them and pass one on to DS too, poor little guy. Hope this all passes for you so soon. I know how awful it is to see those things, they frightened me on my sis let alone my own son!
Take care and thinking of you,

Thank you for that. DS1 is a lot better, had a checkup today, and things are going well. No new spots, he will be on antibiotics till next week to make sure his ear infection has completely gone.
Thanks once again :hugs:
 im new to this, my 4 yr old has in the last few months ben diagnosed with this.First the dr said it was just him hitting his knees but a few hours later it looked like he head golf balls under his skin and his legs had doubled in size. The hospital gave him antihistamines and sent us home iwth "insect bites". We had had enough and took him to a different dr as ours was closed and it was sunday, he sent us for a chest xray, and sure enough he had these lumps on his lungs. So back to the hosp where he was sent home and to a paediatrician on antibiotics... diagnosis erythema nodosum , caused by avirus. We were told it was unlikely it would come back until a few days ago when he got a cold and it all came back...Dr has sent us back to paed and seems to think he is allergic to a virus that he keeps getting and has an over active immune system.. google provides some helpful info.... still wan to know more though.. very scarey:thumbsdown: good luck:fingerscrossed:
:hugs: ajz mum and :hugs: for your DS too. Sounds like he has had a terrible case of them. Is the lumps of chest from the virus or the erythema nodosum?? We have always been told it will take a few weeks for them to clear up completely, although I did get very worried the other day when they came back, but found out that was because his ear infection came back. Fingers cross this ear infections disappears and the spots never come back.
Hope your little boy gets better soon, and that no more spots appear. :fingerscrossed::hugs:
