View Full Version : 1 Plus-Size bridesmaid and 2 "normal-sized" bridesmaids...???

Okay, so I'm the Plus-Sized bridesmaid in my friends upcoming wedding.

The 2 other bridesmaids are slim. Well, one is, she's tiny, but the other I'd guess is a size 14. She's tall, and has 3 kids (I've only ever seen her pregnant, she's just had a newborn), so I'm guessing she'll have a bit of a gut.

Still, it would be hard enough trying to dress 3 completely different women in the same dress (I think the bride wants us all to wear the same thing), but I'm a size 18... so what the heck am I going to wear?

Do a lot of shops stock bridesmaid dresses in size 18+, and are these dresses different from the "regular" dresses, or jsut bigger version of the same thing?

I sometimes feel like just dropping out of the wedding so I don't have burden her... but she's my bestie and I'd feel bad doing that. I'm also scared of being embarrassed in front of everyone - being the "fat girl" who won't fit into anything.

Any suggestions or advice? Any info on dresses?

TIA!

I didn't have bridesmaids when I got married but my best friend had three bridesmaids. I was one of them (size 6...tall), her sister (size 12 normally, short) and our other best friend (size 18, short).
The dresses are just bigger sizes but still the same. My best friend (the other bridesmaid) ended up in a size 20, and the sister ended up having a surprise pregnancy so she was 6 months pregnant at the wedding but we all wore the same dress and it looked good in photo's. It was actually a lot easier than we thought to find dresses that suited us all. Don't worry about it, you might be pleasantly surprised!

dont be so hard on yourself!!! :shame:

I agree.. you will look lovely .. honestly .. just FEEL good about yourself on the day .. and it will shine through ..

some places DO stock dresses in a bigger range of sizes.. (all should really .. its stooopid) .. i have a feeling (dont hate me if I'm wrong) but noni b stock different sizes ?? I was the middle bridesmaid in a wedding .. between a size 8 (lucky cow) and a size 18 .. and we ALL wore the same dress .. it was stunning .. shoestring straps .. fitted across the boobs .. then it flowed .. it was a teal?? blue .. AND .. to cover our arms (I HATE my arms .. ) we had the shawls?? (to match the dresses :D) .. so we were ALL comfortable ..

if you AREN"T comfortable with what they are thinking about .. you need to speak up NOW .. otherwise you will stew on it .. the bride that I was bridesmaid for was FANTATSIC .. she took two of us (not the size 8 :laughing) shopping for the dress... when WE were comfortable .. she rang the other girl - who said she would be happy wearing anything ...

:hugs: good luck .. hope the day goes well ..
xx

That's funny Veve....my bestie took me and our other best friend shopping...knowing that if it looked good on a girl who was a size 18-20 and on a girl who is a size 6 then it'd be fine for the size 12 bridesmaid too!

My three bridesmaids and me could not have been a more diverse bunch if we'd tried!

Luckily I had a good friend making all the dresses. They were all the same style, white for me, blue for the girls. I didn't have a traditional wedding gown. It was just a dress that was made in white.

The smallest bridesmaid is a tiny little thing, about a 6-8, and the only woman I know who was trying to put ON weight for her wedding! The next one was about a size 10-12, then me at 14-16, and the maid of honour at about 18.

My sisters were my bridesmaids & they are totally different. One is short & kinda chubby, the other tall & fat (no other way to put it). I dressed them in the same dress from Noni B, was a really nice evening style flowy dress & it looked great on them :)

At my wedding, my 3 bridesmaids were not only different builds, but also totally different personalities.

To resolve the problem of dresses, I chose a nice fabric in a colour to match the colour theme of ice-blue & silver and they all had dresses made to suit themselves.

It turned out really lovely, as they all matched, but all had dresses that looked amazing on them.

I was the skinny at my wedding with 2 larger bridesmaids. One size 18ish and one size 22. Plus one of them was breastfeeding a newborn so had to find a style that would work for that!

They did end up wearing the same dress and it looked good.

At my size 22 bridesmaid's wedding there was skinny me @ 5 months pg, and the other bridesmaid roughly a 12. The bride chose the fabric and we could choose whatever style we wanted. The dresses were totally different, but the same colour and fabric - they looked great! Maybe that's something you could try too.

Most of the wedding dress stores around go from a size 6 - 30. They normally take about 12 weeks to be made. But they way the bride can choose a dress she likes and the shop will take everyones measurments and you should all get something that fits well. The shop workers seem to know what works as well, eg: need a dress that covers a baby belly. Most dreses will come in about 40 different colours.
Hugs for brides and Bless the bride are 2 stores that do this in Sydney. Check out there website and they may have links to other stores in other states. i'm not sure though. But they have most of the styles of dresses online to look at and colour and size charts.

I was a brides maid when i was pregnant. We picked a patern at spotlight that we all agreed on, brought the material and went to a dress maker who did a great job of all of our dresses.

This is what I was going to suggest. I think its a fantastic idea. If you mentioned it to your friend she might go for it!

Well I have no idea about the dresses, but I saw you the other night miss sass, and I thought you were a little hottie... you have the most fabulous cleavage I have ever come across, and you look like a WOMAN. Take it from a 33 year old who still gets asked for ID when she goes out for a drink, I'd give anything to have a few of your curves.

My SIL is having the same prob. She has 1 very skinny bridesmaid and one very large bridesmaid. They are accomodating for the larger girl though and they are going to wear skirts and tops in black, so they dont have to wear a dress that will make her feel uncomfortable. They also chose black because black makes you look thinner.

Thanks for all the replies - and thanks Ali for the comments on my cleavage... (That was all the bra though... I mean, I have a large chest, but they're MUCH saggier... ).

I had a look online at some wedding stores and saw that a lot of them went up to about size 30 in most styles... and my friend, while smaller than me, is a similar shape (curvy... big boobs, big hips... my waist is still kinda big, but it's smaller than boobs/hips), so I know she'll pick something nice for us (I HOPE!).

I'll just let her know I'm feeling a bit weird about it... she'll probably tell me I'm being crazy... but having her know might make it a bit better.

I know a while ago she wanted us to wear black... so hopefully she does that - at least it'll slim me down a bit..

I had my SIL as my bridesmaid who was at the time about a size 20+ Don't think that your burdening your friend and I can guarantee you won''t ruin her photos or stand out like a sore thumb. My SIL looked fine. My two bridesmaides had differant dresses the only thing I asked was they had a same or similar colour. Don't stress it will all turn out ok
