Hi, My Son Is 7 Weeks Old And Is On Formula, I Was Just Wondering If Anyone Else Out There Has The Same Problem. When Drinking His Bottle, He Wont Drink More Than 100mls At A Time And Sometimes Mostly At Night He Will Only Drink Around 70 To 80 Mls. Should He Be Drinking The Whole 150mls They Say On The Tin? His Weight And Everything Else Is Fine And He Is A Happy Baby. He Sometimes Gets Constipated And Has A Lot Of Wind Cause He Doesnt Burp A Lot, Other Than That He Is Doing Fine! Any Advice Would Be Appreciated, Thanx!;)
Sounds very similar to Shelby, although we only just upped him to 105 mls today. Soemtimes at night he only takes 50-60. We found that trying him on a lactose free formula and using Infacol helps with the constipation, plus you can also try a little brown sugar with water.
Hi there!
Not sure how much formula newborns should drink (mine bf until 4mths and you can never tell how much they're getting with the boob) and they are all different. But I would go by how happy and contented he is rather than the amount he is drinking.
My ds should drink 200ml per bottle now (as the tin states), and this very rarely happens. He'll only usually drink 150ml and will get stroppy if I persist. I used to panic over the amounts as he was always under the "norm" but now I go by him and whether or not he seems happy and is gaining weight.
If your lo is gaining weight and seems content, then I wouldn't worry too much. If you ask your dr or health centre nurse, I'm sure that they will advise you if he should be drinking more.
Hope this helps!
hello
My bub is similar.. she will sometime drink the whole 150mls and others just drink 100ml or just 50mls here and 50mls there! And at night she will drink 2 feeds of 150mls 3 hours apart! Some times I just feel like I am feeding all the time
I spoke to my midwife and she said that its fine and some babys are just a little picky! I find giving bubs some cooled boiled water helps heaps with constipation and she loves it now! Its also good to keep them hydrated!
Good luck
Brooke
Hey there. I wouldn't worry about what it says on the tin. My 10mth DD was on formula from very early on and she would either have a lot less than what it said on the tin and then at other stages she would have more. I was told that the way to work out how much they should be having is multiply your baby's weight by 150mls then divide by how many feeds they have in a day. For example 5(kg) x 150mls = 750 mls divided by 6 feeds per day = 125mls per bottle give or take a little depending on the scoop of your formula brand. Hope this makes sense and helps!!! And like everyone else says as long as bubs is putting on weight and seems content then all is GREAT!!!

My son sometimes goes through times when he wont drink more than 100ml's at a time sometimes less and hes 5 months but at 7 weeks he went through a growth spurt and drank 180ml's every 3.5-4 hours but the amounts on the tin are only a guide some babies drink less and some drink more

thanx 4 ur replies, it does help and make me feel much better about how much bubs is drinking! :o :) :p ;)
As the others have said don't worry they all drink what they need and each child is different. My DS only started drinking 100ml at about 7 mths. Yet somehow he still gained weight.

This is what we used until DS was about 4mo. Then we went by the tin as DS is a guts!!
Is your bub falling asleep or just refusing to take more?
Have you tried waiting a short while - say 10-15 mins and then offering it again?

;) Hi Len, he does fall asleep sometimes so i will change his nappy to try and keep him up a little, it sometimes works but most of the time he wont take anymore. Sometimes i think maybe because he doesnt burp a lot that he is to full. Any suggestions other than gripe water and infacol?:p
My DS is a gutts and nearly always took his bottle, but would refuse it if he needed to burp. I found trying to burp him while I was sitting down was hopeless. I found if I stood up and held him over my shoulder, he would be able to burp easier - Don't know why?? Just did!?? Maybe I was too laid back in bed or on the lounge. :)
Also if he was falling asleep, I would tickle his thigh (that is where my hand would reach when holding him) until he would keep drinking. Most of the time he wouldn't open his eyes, but as long as he kept sucking then that was OK.
Another friend of mine used to push her DD knees up near her chest by holding her feet (not after a feed though) and that would help with the wind problem ;)
