View Full Version : OUCH! biting!
Hi guys
DS is 5months on the 29thjan, he cut his first tooth last week. Damn it hurts when he bites down on my nipple. I say no to him, but that doesnt do anything. i thought that he might be doing it because he isnt hungry but he is. i went through a episode today. i had ebm in a bottle and he gobbled it up, tried to bf him....munch munch munch on my poor nipple.
i have just finished antibiotics for a cut on my nipple from a expressing machine, i dont want to go through the pain of a bite wound.
any suggestions??

A few here have said they used to put bubs down as soon as they bit them so that they would recognise that biting meant no boobie. They learn quick apparently.
Otherwise it may be a case of working out whether they are latching properly (?) im not too sure hopefully Goosie or JanetF or other bf mummies can help as i had to stop as bubs did this from the moment he was born.
Good luck there is a way through this dont stress too much :)
Hi Tamz
I've also heard of women saying no (calmly if you can ;) ) and putting baby down.
The other thing is to watch him like a hawk. If the teeth are on the bottom, most babies will find it physically impossible to bite you, because their tongue should actually be between their teeth and your boob. They need to (quite deliberately) stop sucking, pull their tongue in and then bite you. If you notice that he stops sucking before biting you, you can be pre-emptive about taking him off.
Hope this helps
Tyler did this a few times, and I successfully cured him by saying 'no biting' not in a harsh way, and simply putting him on the ground, and then putting him back on the breast after a bit, the key is just to be consistent, they are not silly, and cotton on pretty quickly! :D
If thier precious boob is in danger, they will soon desist!
All the best!
Hi,
I had the same prob with my now 9yr old!! He cut his two bottom teeth a week before he turned 5mths. I found that using a breast sheild helped from teeth breaking the skin... I also put him down every time he bit me and told him NO. He soon learnt not to bite me. Well until he was cutting the next tooth, then we had to get the sheild out again and start again with the no's....
Anyway i BF him until he was 12mhts old, i have BF all my children, (all to 12mhts) and he was the only biter! Well so far currently BF number 4!!!
So good luck and happy BF!!!!!!:)
I know this sounds awful but it worked very well for me after it was suggested by a poor mum also being bitten.
Usually they bite when they are towards the end of the feed or at least not starving as they are at the beginning so keeping an eye on them is a good way to stop it before it happens.
With my DD i would have a hell of a time getting her to 'release' her teeth and would panic and try and pull her off as she was biting which would make the pain worse. Instead I gently pulled her into my breast which blocked her nose meaning she had to open her mouth to breathe and she lets go (so to speak). I only had to do this 3 or 4 times and she got the message.
