Hi there, I am 6 weeks (and 2 days!) pregnant! After TTC for a year, it was found that I have PCOS (I also have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis disease!) and for some months I have been treated for with the drug Metformin, which seems to have helped me drop some weight and conceive. I got a phonecall from my GP this afternoon (following a quick call she made to an endocrinologist) advising me to stop taking the metformine because it can cause birth deformaties. I was quite upset, having asked her last week if it was safe to continue taking the metformin, and she advised that I should continue to do so. Then, she put in a call to the obstetrician that I registered with, and left me a voicemail message explaining that he has advised her that it is safe to take Metformin during pregnancy up to 13 weeks.
I have since been surfing the net trying to find information on this, but am still conflicted/confused by what I am reading. Some sites say that it can cause miscarriage if you stop taking metformin, other sites recommend that you stop taking metformin immediately because of the potential problems. I have waited for this baby for so long and want to do everything to ensure that I have a full-term pregnancy and a healthy baby - does anyone out there have experience with metformin during pregnancy? I'd love to hear from you. Thanks! :o)
