View Full Version : Who uses a safety harness for walking toddler? Lost my Toddler today!
Just wondering who uses a safety harness/reins for toddler?
How do you find it, what type do you recommend.
I lost my toddler in Toyworld today, I looked away for one second and he was gone. I raced around the whole shop and couldn't find him and panicked he could have run out the front doors  the lady in the shop helped me and he ran through their back door into their warehouse OMG. I got scared... I really need something to keep him close specially as going to be travelling soon.
I have no problem using them. We used to use a harness buddy thing for Josh, but didn't have to use it all the time. If it means they are safe and close by, i think it's great.

The puppy and monkey ones are on sale at Toys R Us, Kmart (saw them there today!) and I would guess Target. Around $30'ish ...... from memory anyway!
I don't know where you'd get them on the coast, but I got mine from Baby N Things at Mt. Gravatt.

That's what we have too! I got mine from K Mart.
Escaping and quick getaways must run in the family. My parents would never venture out unless I was on a leash too!
I got one at Target for about $12, I think it is a Tommee Tippee brand one and it does the job great!
Hi there,
You can get them from www.bambinipronto.com.au under their safety section.
Good Luck!

I'll def. use one with my younger one, once he starts walking.
For my older one, it's already to late, he was fine when he started walking, til just recently.
He always walked a bit ahead of us but still so that he felt safe and could see us. But now, he just doesn't care anymore..
But if I put him onto a leash, he screams and throws huge tantrums and wouldn't move.. So I just let him w/o leash..
He's not always bad, just some days..
I think, you have to start basically, when the child starts walking, otherwise, they won't accept it and start their tantrums..
But maybe it's just my wild Toddler.. :o

I have used one on Ronan when in Melb- I felt awful, but he was about 19-20 months, a fast runner, and I was pg and going to lose him under a tram unless I just got over my yucky feelings towards leashes and just went and got one. So I did.
A few months later, he started always holding my hand or walking very close to me when not in the pram or trolley.
However he has just started running off again  Some of you know exaclty how this feels... sickening.
The problem is, he has just turned 3 and I feel that I should be able to control him and that he looks too old for the leash now :o What to do?!
I don't yet as he's very new to the whole walking malarky but I have already bought a harness buddy for when the time comes.
My nephew had a very plain version and it worked very well. He wasn't constantly trying to wriggle out of my hands and was still perfectly safe.
I use one on my DS1 (who is 2)...and got hauled over the coals for it by a friend yesterday...she was extremely rude telling me she "would let me continue walking my dog" and storming off in a right old huff! The cheek of it.
Anyway, I got mine from babyland. I think they are great. It was around $15 and worth every cent...even if some people are too opinionated to keep their mouths shut about what doesn't concern them (they would have plenty to say if he ran into the road)...can you tell I was a bit cross about it?!
k2ma: teach your son to bark. I fully intend to.
:D
 Great idea Beany!! I was just so taken aback cos she did not even say hello...just launched straight into the tirade of how far could he run, really how silly putting a child on a leash etc.
There are lots of things that other parents do that I would not do with my kids, but it is not my place to berate them for it...
Barking though...now THAT would 'get her goat' hehehehehe...you are wicked.
And how far can he run with you holding onto his hand?
It's a silly argument against harnesses, really. And do remind her that wild dogs don't wear leashes. So does that make her kids feral? :p
we have the unicorn one, and plan to also get a wrist strap, she is lightning fast and if she see's you coming she squeals and turns and runs the other way, she is like a lamb and I am like an un-trained border collie :D

 nah,..I personally dont like them,....but Scarlett is not a runner,...and she knows that if we are at the shops, jst the 3 of us, without DH, then she has to go in a trolley,.....
I have a monkey backpack one for EJ though so far havent really used it much as she doesnt really like it on. She was running off also when put down in shops - since i bought it though shes now decided to hold hands all the time now. Im sure though its going to be used more when she decides that she wont sit in the trolley anymore when go shopping.

We have the playgro brand harness - I bought it from Terry White's at Carindale - about $12.95 (from my very dodgy memory).
It was a lifesaver, but I've always thought the monkey ones were gorgeous too. I still keep it in the bottom of the nappybag, just in case.
(And just quietly, misskitty, how adorable is Millie in those little shorties? What a beautiful child!)

I got one from toys r us yesterday for $25 :smiliedance: they are on special!
Zara has the horsey!!
Yup I just got a little bear harness for my DD as well from Toys r us for $25 but was a little disappointed that the bear backpack isn't really much of a backpack for them to carry stuff in (I guess I was hoping it would be a bigger backpack so my DD could start carrying her own loot! LOL  )
I also bought a wrist ID tag from Target for about $4.50 which you just write your mobile number just in case they do get lost and hopefully then if a staff member from a store sees it they can ring you.....

Thanks will check it out :)

Wish I had Toys R Us here
Jumping Jack Flash (.com.au) also sell them online. As do most baby stores these days.
The monkey and unicorn ones and such are made by Goldbug and are called a 3 in 1 buddy harness
I found ONE!!! Gave to my DS tonight to play a game, it is the doggy one. He thinks it was fun walking around the house with me holding it's tail....making it fun for him, he also gave the little doggy a kiss so I think this will work well :yelclap: :yelclap: :yelclap:

i'll definitely be getting one for the Ekka this year and for our overseas trip as we have a few airport transfers - and thats definitely when a toddler can go astray.

I got one of those for Matthew when he was 18mths old...........it didn't fit him. :banghead: :banghead:
As it turns out though, he was only a runner for 2wks, so I didn't really end up needing it.

We said we would NEVER do it, but like many things - we caved! We bought one on the weekend from Babys Galore (Toys R Us sold out) was $35. We used it yesterday when we took DS to the Fairfield City Farm. We got lots of foul looks but it made us feel safter, our day went smoothly and he likes his little doggy. Needless to say, DH and I still felt like **** - but am sure we will get over it eventually!

I use the backpack one that's just a brightly coloured backpack for my twins. They love having their own bag and carry their snacks in them. They can also use them as a bag without the strap attached too. Which is handy for a big day out.
I don't use them much now only if we are going somewhere really busy or for a big day out. But when I don't have the backpack ones I carry the elastic ones that attach to their wrists in my handbag. The girls know if they try to run away then they will have to wear them. So they don't try very often now.:smiliedance:

I was going to say that I thought leashes were cruel but after reading this thread I take it back. Mind you I only have one child who is not walking yet so for all I knbow it wont be long til I'm in the same boat as everyone else especially for mums with two bubs or preg with another when bub is a toddler it must be hard pushing a pram then tryng to run after a runaway baby at the same tme
You guys have changed my perspective on these things

Hi we have one for our 19 mth old son its the bear backpack. i rather have ppl stare at us (weve had a good response especially from the older generation saying its alot nicer than the old style strap harness u could only get) than them seeing in the paper child dies after being runover. if had harness..
well thats how we feel about it. it happens alot. so as long as bub is safe wot does it matter which u choose. As long as u can control the situation. and remember even thou we have eyes in the back of our heads sometimes we have blinkers on them. so we dont see everything or are fast enough.
Happy deciding. :hugs:

Good :)
As I said my DS thinks it's a game anyway :D
At the end of the day safety is the most important thing and I couldn't care less what any busy body says in a shop.
Until you have a toddler and have been 'scared' you realise that safety is the key :D

I think they're great  . If it wasn't for them I don't know if my little brother would still be around, he tried to get on a train in Adelaide years ago and luckily a little old lady stopped him. Mum and dad swore by it.
I think I might need one soon, DS doesn't like to hold my hand any more (sooooo embarrassing for him and all) and tried to escape from woolies the other day. I nearly had a heart attack.
The doggy ones sound great.
