I am a first time mum to 9 week old Ryan.
My apologises if this is a long story.
I have been reading info about reflux.

We took him to the dr last week as he was screaming after feeds and locking his legs out, and throwing himself back, had many wet sounding burps, and hiccups.

dr said possible reflux and he has been on gaviscon for nearly a week.

I dont really think it is doing much.

He sleeps well at night, 10 pm till 4am then back to sleep by 5ish till 730ish ( which i am grateful for). during the day is when we have trouble.

for the last 3 days he has been having a feed anywhere from 120 - 180mls, (he has been on s26 gold from birth), taking the bottle well, and burping after each feed.
But 1 to 2 hours after a feed will be screaming again and arching his back locking his legs out and waving his arms around, almost like he is still hungry. we tyr to have at least 3 hours between feeds.

he eventually settles after about 20mins of crying and goes off to sleep only to wake up 15 - 20 mins later crying again. he can be happily smiling and cooing in the bouncer then out of the blue will scream, wave his arms and lock his legs out and arch his back.

we have elevated one end of his cot, sit him upright to feed and keep him there for a while after feeds.
he does not bring any milk up at all, but seems to be swallowing alot and almost chewing,

we go to the dr again tomorrow, just wondering if this sounds like reflux?

Hi,

No need for apologies, Sounds like you are on the right track, feeding Ryan upright and keeping him that way for at least 20 minutes will help keep the milk down. Have you tried changing his formula to a reflux one like S26 AR this is a thicker formula, you can also thicken his formula with Karicare thickener, but ask your childcare nurse / doctor and they can inform you of this. (it may not always be the answer for a refluxer, but you may want to try it at some point too)

It sounds like it is a good idea to go back to your doctor for a review again, so that's great- I hope they continue to take the problem seriously. Perhaps a longer acting reflux medication like Zantac or Losec might be more helpful than Infant Gaviscon.

Im glad that he is sleeping well for you and hopefully this will continue- some refluxers do this, whether it is just because they are so tired from their day, or whether they reflux less during the night, it's hard to say. I wonder if he may have an intolerance to cows milk protein or other foods too, which may be worth talking to your doctor about as well.

There are lots of different things you can try, and it is often a matter of trial and error unfortunately. You are doing a fantastic job and keep going with your instinct, mum always knows best.

Good luck.
Marie
