Yes, I had it for a year. Had no bleeding, nothing. Found it to be fantastic...

I had one in for 2 1/2 years - I had intermittent spotting for the first 3-4 months, but after that it settled down and wasn't a problem. I only had it removed cause we began TTC!
They work for some people - others they dont. A gf of mine had one but couldn't stand the bleeding, so she got it removed.
Me? I just put up with it. :D Maybe that makes me silly? Oh well.
Definitley recommend it. I had an Implanon.

Thanks girls, i might give it a go.
I was on the pill and they changed the packaging of it, so instead of it going all around the edge it goes in like a zig zag and i made two mistakes with it so i really dont want to risk making another and falling pregnant! So the implant comes in handy as i dont have to worry about it for 3 years :p
Thanks again!

Give it a go - if it doesn't agree with you at least you tried.
$25 for 3 years in my books isn't bad either!!!

is that all it is???
Alot cheaper then paying for the pill lol
I tried it and haemorraged severely for 5 weeks, lost alot of weight, was basicaly bed-ridden for a fortnight afterwards to regain my strength. Was a scarey experience.
Hope you have more luck than I did

That was all I paid when I got it put in - but that was 4 years ago. I paid to see a private GP, and then she gave me a script. I then picked it up (it was only $25 on its own) and then had to pay for a longer appt with the private GP. So all up including both appointments (after medicare) would have been about $100.

i think there is another thread on it somewhere too, maybe try searching implanon, im not sure how to post it on here:o
I had one in for about a year and a half, i bled on and off for the first month then after that i was lucky to get my period every 2 months, when i did they were extremely painfull (never had painfull periods before in my life) not only that there was alot of blood and i was MOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDYYYYY all the time!!!! I felt 100% better after getting it taken out, the doctor who removed it said he cant believe i kept it in that long because most of the girls he does only have it in for 2-6 months! but everyone is different and it might be ok for you! goodluck with whatever you decide to try. It was only $25 when i got it done and i think my appointment was only $40 or so dollars so it was cheap, i personally wouldnt get it done again but it does work for some people. 2 of my friends developed big cyst like things on them after getting it done aswell so they had it removed....weird!
goodluck anyway:D
before putting the implant in I was already underweight, 174cm tall and 46kg, after the 5 weeks of haemorrageing I only weighed 39kg! NOT COOL!
Scared the hell out of me and DH, not to mention our families!

One of my friends had the implanon and had a baby/toddler who she was carrying all the time, and she was getting really dizzy, losing weight, heavy bleeding and then fell pg, turns out that cos the baby was rubbing the rod all the time whilst being carried, it was releasing extra hormones and therefore it ran out quicker and made her have extra side effects due to extra hormones. Maybe ask GP about putting it in the other arm to the one you carry bubs on.
The option I am going to go with is an IUD type thing which releases hormones locally into your uterus. Its name starts with M and is a ladies name, but cant remember what exactly it is. Anyhow, it lasts for 5 years. It has been around for AGES, but they have only just put it on the PBS so not many people used it before cos of cost, but now it is only about $60.

I had Implanon in for about 9 months, I had really bad headaches (they stopped once it was removed).
I'm really bad at remembering pills so it was good in that respect. But I've heard that it is quite common for it to not put it at all during the procedure (doctors dont always check that it is in place) and then the women end up pregnant:eek:
If you do get one make sure you can feel it under the skin:)

Ooohh i dont know hmmm...plus im on anti depressants, so i dont want it to affect the way they work!

Yeah, I had a baby at the time of my Implanon and I got them to put it in the arm I didn't use as much, they will normally put it in your left arm.
I think the IUD you're thinking of is the Mirena, I think it sounds pretty good and works. A good friend I mine had one after having three kids and it fell out!! She now has 4!!!
And I think that you have to check every month that you can still feel the strings that are attached to it, thats what put me off it.

You chart your morning waking temperature and a few other signs that show you when you ovulate and when your most fertile. If you go to www.fertilityfriend.com they have free software that you can use to chart with. A lot of us girls TTC use it. You can have a look at my link if you wana see how it works.:)
It looks a bit confusing but when you read through how it works its quite straight forward.

if you stick to it, and if DH doesn't mind abstaining during your fertile days, my cousin and her DH did it for 8 years with out getting preg, just had their first planned baby last year. But a guess with any method of contraceptive theres alway a chance.
All the best on making a decision. (I wish there were more options for male contraceptives!!!)
I had implanon for 2 years and loved it. It stoped my period for good and apart from a headache (which might not even be related) it was all good.
The only thing you got to make sure is that it actually goes in the arm and not fall out of the tube befor the doc puts it in. Plus its a 100% safe. Would recomended to any one apart from anyone suffering any kind of depression. (can make it worse. It did for me, and i didnt know i had it)

Did you know that you need a certain amount of body fat to be able to conceive????

Im 173cm tall too kaidens mum!!! Im currently 74kg! Going back down to my normail weight of 68-70kg!!!
When i read 46 too made me feel HUGE!
yep I know that. That all happened 2 yrs before I had my son. I'm currently 54kg, my 'ideal weight' is 56kg so I'm pretty happy with where I'm at now. Don't plan on getting any thiner!
It disgusted me to look in the mirror when I was 39kg, just skin and bone, sunken eyes, it was awful. NEVER want to go back to that!
PS when I say 'ideal weight' I mean the weight my doc told me is healthy for my height/age/frame.

cool :) well its good that your back at a weight thats more healthy for you thats for sure...you poor thing having to go through that!
I've been told the reason the implant made me haemorrage is that I was 10kg underweight when I had it put in, low bodyfat meaning it was being released into my system too fast or something.

Wow there you go,l learn something new everyday!!! Shouldn't your doctor have know that before putting it in?
Yep, one of the reasons I no longer see that doctor.
When he was removing the implant he said it was the third one he'd removed in 2 days, and all from "skinny girls" that's when he mentioned the bodyfat factor
Then again he was the one who told DH his IBS was "all in his head" and my severe UTI was "just wind!" We haven't seen that doctor since the implanon incident, That was January 2003!!

Hi, sorry didn't have time to read everyone elses replies but here is something to think about;
I have 2 friends who both had the implant and both fell pregnant on it. I know that nothing is 100% but they are the only 2 people I know that had it, and it failed them. I also have a friend who fell pregnant with an IUD and they couldn't take it out till after baby came:eek: .

Hi
I had impanon for 1 year and had it removed because the bleeding was happening every 2 weeks at first. I bled for 18 weeks straight before they took it out. I am now pregnant (it was planned) im due in august so im 3months.
Alot of women have this problem but some dont have any at all. It cost me about $5.00 (i have a health care card) for the actaul implant and i had it put in at family planning cause that was he only place in brisi i could find that does it!! I had it removed by the same people and it cost me $25
Hopefully ull have more luck with it
If your in brisi i can give you the number of UQ they are doing a study and trail of a medication to combat the bleeding, 'cause implanon itself is a very effective method of birth control and its convientint its just it has soooo many side effects
i have been on the pill for a couple of years now and i was considering getting the implant thing in my arm but now i dont think i will! most people have had problems!
Nicola
Hi Natalie
I have had two girlfriends with an Implanon and they had dream runs with theirs, they would rave about them.
I think that I read that you were on anti-depressants. My experience with Implanon was unpleasant because I suffer from depression and my mood just got worse and worse after having a reasonably good 6 months or so. I think that in my case, I'm sensitive to progesterone (or probably just hormones in general) because I found in the first few weeks of pregnancy as the progesterone was rising, were absolute hell moodwise.
But despite that, I say give it a go - it might just work for you.

Hello all, I am new to the site!! I have posted in a few areas as I not sure where to add this!!!
I have read through many of your posts and think you are all so supportive to each other. It is lovely to see a network of women around which offers such great advice and support. Congratulations to all who have had BFP's and I do send out big hugs to the women how are TTC.
I’m currently TTC...excuse me if I don't get all the abbreviations correct!! My DH and I have been TTC for 4 months now. I came off the pill on July 05 but did not get regular cycles there after. I have only have 2 periods in 7months. I have gone to the GP, done blood tests, ultra-sound, diagnosed with PCOS but have since gone to see my gyno and he seems to think that it is too early to pin point this problem. My GP put me on Diaformin straight away and was on that for about 3 weeks till I saw my gyno who told me to get off them immediately as he thinks it was a harsh decision to be on medication so early since only been trying for 4 months.
I am 28 yrs and so is my DH, we have been married for nearly 3 yrs and would love nothing more that to have a baby...but i have no idea when I am ovulating since my body is completely out of wack. Gyno has told me to do the BBT which I have been doing for the 24 days. I also bought maybe baby but not sure it is reliable for someone like me who has this situation with my cycles. The day i purchased the maybe baby and ferns did appear last week. We have BD since we saw the ferns. The lI have cramping through the last couple of weeks, which I think were ovulation pain as my temp did rise then dip. The last 4 days I have had more cramping, a dull feeling in my stomach that has not gone, fluttering sensations like little movements in my stomach from time to time. I have a week bladder so the weeing thing is always an issue, 4 days ago my temp took a huge dip the rise again since then. So from what I think is correct I ovulated last Wednesday or Thursday. When is the best length of time to wait to do the HPT? I know most of you have said 14dpo.
Sorry again for the long message...I was so excited to speak to you all...promise the next posts will not be this long!!!
If anyone can shed some light for me that would be great....even some tips etc
from wishstar......desperately wanting a BFP soon!!!

Hi Natalie
I have had the implanon for about 8 months. I am 33 and 56kgs. I have had no problems with it at all. It was sore for a couple of days and it got itchy and annoying while bf on that side. Only bled for 1 week after. Then spotting for about 2 wks after that. Then nothing. Have had girlfriends though who didnt like it and felt it made them slightly mad!! I think that it is different with everyone. It works for me. But it didnt cost me $25 it cost nearly $200. That was just the script. My doctor also told me that the only way people can fall pregnant is if the implant doesnt actually go in. Apparently it is the same colour as the injection tip of the needle and difficult to see whether it has gone in or not. I told him to stop talking and concentrate. The only bad thing about it is if it doesnt work for you having to have it removed so soon. Good luck with your decision.:)
Hi Natalie
I had mine from when DS was 6 weeks till he was 16months. I found it great - my OB put mine in and he also said make sure you get a doc who's certified to put them in as the only risks are when the docs don't position them right.
We fell pregnant on the second cycle after removal - that was a real plus - I didn't want to go through the pill waits again (was on pill for about 10years before TTC DS - took about 6months then, but the pill depletes your zinc etc.)
I know one girl who bled with her implanon and had it removed after about 5weeks, but all others I know - great raves (including me:) )
Don't know why you had to pay $200 thirdtimeround - mine was $27 and I'm not on any health care card or pension. I'd be strongly questioning my pharmacist about that one. (In fact my sister is a pharmacist and I think I'll ask her as it sounds like your pharmacy is doing the dirty on customers).

Hi Nat- I had mine in for 5 weeks and i hated it! I was soooo moody and i bleed the whole time, it was awful, but thats just my experience, some women had no problems at all. Its worth giving it ago and see what works best for you:)

hi there,
I had the implanon in my arm about 3 yrs ago now and i too was very skinny.I had lots of bleeding that would come and go it would be heavy then light. Then i was getting really bad headaches it wasnt nice at all.I ended up getting it removed and it took ages to get out they couldnt find it??It also leaves you with a scar which isnt that bad i had to have 3 stitches because they had to cut it open more to get it out.
Hey everyone.
Sorry if this seems like a stupid question. :o Im nearly 19 yrs old and have been on the pill for a while but i was thinking about getting the implant thing in my arm but not sure coz of all the bad stories! How do they put it in? As in do they knock you out for it? and where can you get it done? i live near perth
thanks

Hi Nicola,
No not a stupid ? at all!!! I was 16 when I had my Implanon put in. I had alot of probs with it (i am now almost 18) I had bleeding for 17 weeks straight. It is really common to have probs with bleeding that is why most women have it removed!
As for how they insert it- well they dont knock you out. They give you an injection of local anistetich then they put you arm out straight and flat. they get the implant which is the size and thickness of a match and they place it into what looks like a gun with a needle on it. They wait until your arm is completly numb about 5-10mins then they have a feel of your arm and in it goes!! You dont feel anything! If you are scared of needles like me (im a dental assistant so I dont know why I am scared of them as I use them every day) its best NOT to look!!! They bandage your arm and off you go. You can feel the implant with your fingers and its actually kind of funny to see peoples reaction when you say feel this!!! They get grossed out!!!
I had mine put in at Family Planning- I am in Brisbane so Im not sure about where you can have it done. The best thing to do is ask your dr and they should be able to point you in the right direction. It cost me around $5 for the actual implant perscription and then about $25 to have it put in. It was also $25 to have it removed(we were TTC plus the bleeding forced me to have it out) I am now 3 months pregnant and it took 2 months for us to concieve so it dosnt take as long as it can on the pill for your fertility to return to normal
Hope all this helps
Take care
Your GP does it, I got a local anaesthetic, then they put it in with a HUGE needle (has to be big enough to deliver the stick, which is almost the size of a matchstick).

Nicola- I too live in Perth, your local gp will do it, and if you go somewhere that bulk bills you can get it done. Im not sure if you live north of south of the river. I had my done a King Edward Memorial Hospital, and i got it talking out at the South Street Medical Center in O`connor, and it didnt cost be due to it being a bulk billing doctors surgery.
