Well, as most of you know, I was totally fed up last week and almost resorted to utilising the natural induction method - then P woke up ;)
I had been very restless and cranky all day on Monday and didn't get to bed before 11pm that night. Can't say I slept much once I got there either. Anyway, early Tuesday morning at 0130, I started feeling some slight cramps in my pelvis. I didn't really take much notice as I had these pains before and they turned out to be nothing. This time, they got more regular, didn't hurt at all, but I started getting a 'feeling' that this was more than just pains.
I got up and walked around for a few minutes then decided to wake P so he could time the pains while I paced.
The pains were lasting 30-40 secs and happening every 2-3 minutes so I rang the hospital for advice. Due to my previous birth unfolding quickly, the midwife told me to come in, which I was more than happy with. My biggest fear had been not making it out the front door - crisis avoided.
Got to the hospital at about 3am and the pains slowed a lot. I was 5 cm dilated when I got there. I wasn't happy about the thought of being sent home or worse, to the ward, so I paced around the hospital and ran up the stairs a few times to kick it off again. Seems exercise can work especially if you stomp your feet with as much force as you can muster.
My middie, Lynne asked if I wanted my waters broken if Bubba L was down far enough, to which I said yes. Success! He had come down a few more cm so my waters were pierced and I waited (with gas in my mouth) for the sudden increase in contractions.
I wasn't to be disappointed. They came thick and they came bloody fast. I was completely sucked in by Mr Gas and wouldn't let go of the mouthpiece, constantly breathing through the intense pain. It was at regular intervals now and I could feel every inch of my body doing exactly as nature intended. My mind wandered often so I could 'zone out' for a break then come back when I needed to.
About 10.15 am, I finally started to feel the urge to push. I was more in control this time and although I was completely stoned, I was still aware of what needed to be done. P was talking to me in my ear, continuing to be the fantastic support that I needed. I was concentrating on his voice and after 9 minutes, pushed baby Lincoln Reginald James into his father's waiting arms. He was and is simply perfect. He weighed 7lb 7oz which isn't exactly the bigger second baby I was 'assured' of getting by 'experts', but his colour was good, head perfectly round and so settled. He lay on my chest for nearly 2 hours and I still haven't heard him cry yet.
I spent two nights in my own room in hospital and am now home, happy with this birth, estatic with my family.
