Ok so I decided ages ago that I was going to use mcn, now we are starting to buy some and we need some advice!
So to start with we are thinking of mainly using terry flats while baby is small, and basically we are looking at OSFA and for dp a sml collection of AIO's.
So currently we have:
12 x terry flats (will buy either another 8/12pk)
2 x 2nd hand GK funtimes
Looking at buying before baby's arrival:
GK day and night trial pack (2 x anytimes)
BBH deluxe trial pack (1 hemp, 1 bamboo)
A nappylicious AIO
And i have money to get 3 of the new BBH magic-alls - what size do people suggest? should we get 2 NB and 1 sml or the other way round?
Also looking at getting a cherubs kiss rapheal for newborn and was looking at either a darlings downunder or nuture nappies starter pack type things but not sure if they are worth the money?
I think later on we will get more BBB for night use, but just waiting to see what fits baby. We are planning on using/setting aside $1000 for mcn, so dont want to spend it all upfront and will want to add more as baby grows etc
Sorry im rambling on - so what do people think? - what else do i need/ should look at getting??
what about covers/soakers etc for the flats?

wow.. 1k :yelclap: It's so easy to spend that's the only problem.
Okey dokey if it were me spending the money (starting fresh of course) I would get..
A little squirt
A BBH full time pack - half hemp half bamboo and they are a one size fits most  will last bub from go to woe!
A few knitted covers
and maybe some show off nappies like BerryPlush.
I chose the above because I already know what works brilliantly for us.
Now, the thing is you don't know what type of nappy will work for you. Not every type of MCN works for everyone, keep that in mind. So getting the flats and covers (either PUL or wool) is a great start. Think about sampling different kinds of MCN that way if a particular sort doesn't work for you, you aren't stuck with a large amount of one kind.
Definitely think about getting a little squirt, it makes life A LOT easier. A wetbag for when you are out and about. Fleece liners. A bucket with a tight lid. Snappis.
Hmm.. my brain is dead this time of a night  I'll get back to you if there's anything else I can think of.

i think you are doing the right thing getting the trial packs as every bub is different so different nappies work for different people :D
and the resale value is always good if they dont work out for you.
the nurture nappies trial pack is quite a good pack with some nice nappies i their too.
and Jayne is lovely :D

thanks for the replies KarniF00l & My_fallen_angel
we are def getting a little squirt, totally forgot about a wetbag - so thanks for the reminder!!
OOh... I reccomend getting a Bumgenius or Haute nappy too. they are also OSFM.
And Darlings Downunder (.com.au... or something like that ;) ) Has a good starter pack called "poppets pick" which has a collection of a few different sorts.
a pocket, an AIO, a fitted, a cover and a tote bag and some sherpa wipes...

All those accessories listed by Laruen are must-haves... you won't regret getting the Little Squirt!!
Remember that once stuffed, a pocket nappy is just like an AIO! But much more versitile and faster-drying. For example, the BG AIOs aren't absorbant enough for my kids, and are sized. However, the BG pockets are a OSFA, I can stuff them with whatever I want (a flannellette flat for one-wee-use at home or hemp and microfiber for an outing) and they go on and off just the same way as the AIO.
Some of the nappies that I am glad I have include:
Flannellette flats as pocket stuffers (and great for newborn days)
Terry flats for older-then-newborn babies and whenever a nappy is needed for a short period of time (such as between dinner and bathtime). I use them a lot though!
BumGenius pockets (OSFA)
Green Kids pockets (OSFA)- plain colours for daily use, patterns for outings and under summer clothes where they can be seen!
For a trim, tiny, yet reliable pocket (sized, but special!) Swaddlebee Orgainic Velour pockets are fab:thumbsup:
Good fitted nappies for nights- Bamboo Baby Beehinds, Good Night Sleep Tight's by Bubblebubs, Very Baby Simply Nights etc.
Handknitted longies for snugness and total leak protection- great over above fitteds at night
Motherease Airflow and Tots Bots pul covers for explosive bf poos that you don't want all over wool
That's how I'd spend that money!!
Trial packs are a great idea. You'll find that as bub grows and changes your nappy needs will keep changing anyway (esp for the first 6 months) plus you'll have your own preferences/dislikes, so IMO it's best to try a wide range of nappies, sell or swap the ones you don't like, and then buy more of the ones you like.
Personally I think good fitteds with covers and terry flats are great for newborns and small bubs. Pockets and AIOs started working better for us when DS got older, but fitteds are still my faves.
If I had 1000 to spend and was starting over for a new bub:
A dozen terry flats
Fitteds: small Tots Bots, Cuddlebuns, Baby Beehinds Hemp and Bamboo, maybe some bamboo Bits for Bots. Plus Bubblebubs GNST for nights (not really necessary till bub gets bigger though)
Pockets: Bumgenius one sized - wish they'd had these when DS was born! Maybe Swaddlebees AIO pockets too.
AIOs: Bubblebubs, Itti Bitti, Swaddlebees as above.
Covers: 3 x Bummis or Baby beehinds PUL. A couple of Berry plush as covers, for the cuteness factor. Stacinator wool cover. Homemade wool soakers/ shorties/ longies.
Accessories: lots of fleece liners (make your own), a couple of wetbags, at least one nappy bucket (i have 2 - we keep one in the bathroom beside the little squirt), a little squirt, lots of cloth wipes (make your own), various sized hemp bamboo and microfibre boosters and foldups (can use to boost fitteds pockets or aios), ********* or babylegs leg warmers (target has some too), spray bottle for water, or I love Foamy Wipes Wash from Bubblebubs, Pailpals for your nappy bucket.
And i have money to get 3 of the new BBH magic-alls - what size do people suggest? should we get 2 NB and 1 sml or the other way round?
Depends on your bub's size but personally I wouldn't bother with newborn size anything, as they grow so fast...unless you're happy to sell or swap them. When DS was born we stuck to terry flats and small fitteds and didn't really bother with AIOs until he was bigger - I did buy a couple of tiny AIOs but because he had little chicken legs for the first month or so, he leaked runny poo every time I used one! so fitteds with covers were much better at poo containment (and your DP will get the hang of using them, don't worry!) LOL

I second everything Kimbaleo said!
I have a few newborn flannel fitteds for the new baby, the rest are one size or sized. I got 2 magicalls, but I got mediums, as I want them to fit longer and I already have 3 show off small nappies (Berry plush and two bubblebubs)
When I started cloth I got a Babybeehinds deluxe trial pack, a Green kids and a nurture nappies starter pack. They are all excellent and gave me a chance to try all sorts of nappies out on DS first.
Good luck choosing!
