Hi All
Just wondering who is booking in for their nuchal translucency scan at 13 weeks or so?
I am going to discuss it with my GP tomorrow, as I don't see my OB until 12 weeks.
I'm not sure I want to know if bubs has a high risk for Downs or not - I think it will just make me worry more (if that is possible)

i didn't have it done with my other 2 pg's but i'm pretty sure i will this time. dh wants it done but i also think because i'm getting older and the risks are higher. i'll wait and see what the doc says.

Hi Luella,
Yeah, I'm booked in for 10 weeks & they'll be doing the nuchal scan - I figure it's my first chance to see if bubs is ok - hopefully it'll ease my mind if nothing else. But it's probably not necessary if you think you'd rather not know.

I think I'll book in, but more because I want to see my little chubba and make sure it's not all in my imagination!!

nope... Id have to make a 9.5 hour return trip to the city.
My Doctor said it is really above 35 that it increases heaps anyway, Ill get that blood test that gives you an idea if you are high risk or not

My OB told me to have my blood tests between 10 & 11 weeks & my NT scan between 12 & 13 weeks. I am having the BT in 2 weeks time & the scan 2 weeks after that.. I am also having another blood test at 16 weeks to test for spina bifida because I have a family history of it.

Just booked my NT scan today. Will be going for mine at 12 weeks. As far as I'm concerned it's just another chance to check that bub is alive and well.

Hi everyone,
I'm just wondering if when they do a NT scan do they check all the other parts of the baby? I mean not like they do at the 20 weeks scan but do they give you a general idea of how its going etc?
Only asking cos with #1 I had a scan at 12 weeks but I think it was more a dating scan even though I was sure of the dates but it was only because I said I wanted to check that everything was ok.
So when my gp asked if I was to have the NT scan I said yes but I'm not sure if thats what I want or what I had last time.
Thanks
Kel
I had had a 12 week scan with 3 of my 4 bubs, and really just had it to get a little peek of the baby. A friend of mine came back with a high risk result for down syndrome, but didn't want the amnio done, because of the slight risk of miscarriage, and when the baby was born he was perfectly healthy, so the test isn't 100% reliable, but your doctor has probally already told you that. Sometimes if something is wrong, it is better to know about it so that you can read up on the condition and be prepared for it when the baby arrives. I am sure your baby will be fine, I am feeling nice healthy beautiful bub vibes.

Those results look great Mel! Great news!
I am going for my scan on Friday but I don't have another OB appointment for 2 weeks so, unless my OB is worried by the results, I don't think I will get them until I see her again.

The nuchal scan is when you have an ultrasound to test how much fluid has accumulated behind the baby's neck to determine the chance of Down Syndrome (taken from Pg & Birth mag!).

I had mine today all went well as far as i could tell, i will get the results Wednesday and i will update you all with them. I am also a bit peeved as they wouldn't give me a pic they only do it for the 20 week scan, they still said no when i said that DH couldn't get off work and was really hoping to get one to see they STILL said no stupid hospital now he misses out again. I hope he can make it to the 20 week one :fingerscrossed: it will be a 3D one :smiliedance:

I had my scan today too - I just think it is the most incredible thing how well you can see the baby at this scan. I loved every minute of it - even with the busting to go to the loo the whole time. Will get the results later this week but I'm not really worried as I only wanted the scan so I could see the baby. It was soooo worth it! Will post a picture in the appropriate thread as soon as I get the chance.

had a dating scan monday then a nuchal scan yesterday - what a difference.
my 1st nuchal scan in all my pg's and it was very detailed. the sonographer says bub is due on the 12 feb and not the 18 feb on what the hospital dating scan says. midwife at hospital said to go with my date 16 feb.
glad i had the scan and looking forward to the next one in 7 weeks!

Can anyone tell me how much they paid for the Nuchal, & how much they got back from Medicare? We've just been quoted $300 with a 40% rebate. Don't mind paying, just want to make sure it's the usual cost.
Also, do private health funds contribute to things like that?
TIA

I paid $155 for my n/t scan & wasnt able to claim any of it back from Medicare as it is an optional test. I did claim some back with my last pregnancy as my doc marked it as a dating scan as well since it was the first one I had, but I had a dating scan this time round. I can't remember how much I claimed back tho, sorry.
As far as I know, private health cover only covers the costs of the hospital stay & delivery & all pregnancy related claim are made through Medicare.
HTH!

Our NT scan was $89 for a 3D/4D scan and we got $58 back.
Normally the clinic we go to charges $145 for the scan but because we're going through The Angliss Birth Centre, and the ob at the clinic is one of the Birth Centre obs, we get a special rate.

Mine is on Thurs - very excited had my bloods done on Friday! Just booked my 3D 19 week scan also - but I having about 20 weeks so DH can be there...10th october - seems yonks away but will fly I am sure...I have been told 155AUD with no Medicare rebate as a screening test, and I already had a dating scan at 8 weeks. My last pregnancy I just had a scan at 12 weeks and then a triple blood test...they were both bulk billed.

You should get a medicare rebate for the 11-13 week and the 19-20 week scans as far as I've been told. We got most of our money back with both scans last time with DS and will this time as well. I don't know who you are all seeing for your scans but compared with our costs it seems to me many of you are being ripped off or misinformed!!
Are you getting your referrals from your hospital/gp/ob? I'd be looking into it. If you don't have a referral from the right person it may be costing you a lot more than it should!
mahna mahna
14-08-2007, 10:32 AM
yeah elissas, there's a wide variety of costs out there! Makes you wonder.
We got a referral (for the nuchal) to a few different places from our OB - because we're so late getting in, we chose the one that can do it the earliest (I'll be 13 weeks, 2 days). It's also the most expensive, but we get the 'deluxe package' for what we pay LOL. We see a genetic counsellor beforehand, get our own private bathroom off the scan room, wear fluffy robes, get made herbal teas/ cappucinos, then see a Dr to discuss the results after wards. We also get photo prints/ DVD to take home. All completely superfluous, but as it's our only real option, we'll soak it up I guess... :D

Hi everyone,
I had my scan today and what a relief it was. The first thing I said was I'm looking for the heartbeat to which she replied theres a very strong heartbeat and only one baby. Yay and yay.
I got 6 pics and my video but I was just so happy to see the baby and can relax now a bit.
Cost for us was $164.50 and we get $50ish back from Medicare. I think it depends where you go I guess. I had mine done at a private clinic but I know some hospitals do it there or through them and its free.
Anyway I hope everyone due to have theres soon go well.
Kel :)
Oh and the lady said the fluid measurement was low and seemed fine but they still need to check against bloods etc.

Hello everybody,
I have been slack and have missed all this great news, so glad to hear everyone is going well and booked in for scans or have had them, it really is so exciting! I have booked in today for the 18-20 week scan on the 14 September, really can't wait for that.
Oh yeah my scans cost me $190.00 and I think I get about $60 back maybe less, its in Melbourne and easiest for me to get to co's its near work, sounds expensive though in comparison to some of you guys.
Its unreal all these stages we move through...its great to read everybodys good news!

Hi everyone,
I can have a 4D scan for no extra cost at the 18-20 week scan, is anyone else going to do this?
It looks kind of amazing in the mags and stuff but has anyone experienced it?
I just have to tell them when I get there I want a 4D and as long as the baby is in the right position they can do it?
Also is anyone finding out the sex of their baby? I dont think I can help myself, I am impatient for everything! Mums says I should have the surprise for the first one...what is everyone else doing?
Take Care,
Kath :o

Definitely a surprise for us. We went the surprise first time round and will this time too. It's an amazing moment... "it's a...!!" After all the hard work ;)
There's not much more you can do in the way of planning either. Even if I found out I would have stuck with all neutral colours, as a friend of mine was told she was having a girl, went all out with the pink (including nursery), and out popped her DS!!

I am having a 3D scan. What is the difference between 3D & 4D? It is costing me $180 & I'm not sure how much of that I can claim back yet.
We are not finding out the sex tho. I cheated & found out at the very last minute with Ava so I am looking forward to the surprise this time.

3D/4D are the same technology. 4D is the video, 3D is the still imagery, as far as I've been told. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.
The ultrasound clinic we went to does 3D/4D as standard. We didn't even have to ask for it! :D They copy it onto DVD or video tape for us and give us photos. It's amazing.

The nuchal translucency scan that has to be done about 12.5 weeks is considered to be a screening test not a routine ultrasound. I rang Medicare - they do not give you any rebate if you have this scan(ie they measure the folds and combine results with the bichemistry collected). If you have a routine 12 week measurement scan as I did last time, it can be bulk billed or you can get a rebate...
My 19 week anatomy scan I am going to a private clinic and I will get a Medicare rebate as it is a routine ultrasound - the fact they also switch to 3D makes no difference.
So confusing!

All is good, and the risk factor for Downs is extremely low (1 in 15,000) :smiliedance:

My scan went hunky dory...due the 24th, which makes me 13 weeks 4 days...all good! 1 in 10,545 chance of Trisomy 21 so low risk pregnancy...Looking forward to my 3D one now...even this one was so much more advanced and clearer than all of Tillies.
Really feel like I have a baby inside me now. :smiliedance:
