I know this is probably meant to go into the feeding section but i thought i might get a few more responses here.....I am using Nan gold and my dd is now 6 1/2 months and the nan gold has a formula from birth and also a formula from 6 months. Should i only put her on the formula for 6 months in older if she is having regular solids (which she is not)? Just not sure if their needs change after 6 months and thats why they have a formula for 6 months and older. The formula that says suitable from birth has a chart for up to 12 months so i'm assuming im able to use it until 12 months? I'm a little confused.

Hi there

I am a mum of two boys & both have been on formula. From what I understand, one they turn 6 months, they ideally should go on the follow-on formula (from 6 months) as it has different nutrients which the birth-6 months doesn't. Don't think it matters whether they are taking solids or not...

Now im confused too lol
Like you say it has a chart for up to 12 months on the birth one but a follow on formula for 6+ months.
Will be watching this thread closely too.

I don't really think it matters.

The "from birth" formulas are usually recommended until 12 months (so says most formula tins).

So it's perfectly fine for you to use either one once your bub hits 6 months... it doesn't matter either way.

I was reading about this today.

Standard infant formulas labelled 'suitable from birth' are all fine to use for 12 months or more.
However most formula companies also make a follow-on formula. There is no need to change formulas at 6 months unless you want to.

*They have exactly the same energy content as the standard infant formulas.

*Follow on formulas contain a little more protein - but babies of this age do not need the extra protein because they are starting solid foods.

*They have increased amounts of some vitamins and minerals such as calcium and sodium.

*Some hungry babies find them more satisfying because of the extra protein.

My DD is 6.5mths and I put her onto the follow on formula a few weeks ago only because I was told that it had a bit more "guts" to it.
