View Full Version : Very Hungry baby
My DS2 is not even 3wks old and ever since my milk came in (day3-4 after he was born) hes been feeding like there is no tomorrow. My milk is fine and hes putting on lots of weight, its just starting to get a little tiring and I can't stop eating myself because of it. I was just wondering if anyone else has had a baby that always wanted to feed. How they handled it and what they are like now.

:hugs: Lovey, I dunno if my advice will be helpful or not - it might make you wanna chuck a dirty nappy at my head :p I think the only thing you can do is to just feed him constantly. It'll settle down in a few weeks.
Do you have a sling? Depending on your build and dexterity, you might be able to feed him in the sling, thus eliminating your need to hold him with your arms - it will give you two hands free to do other things. (Me personally, I couldn't work it out, because I am a fatty boombaladah :D and also I am unco :D but I have heard of others being able to do it)
His suckling is sorting out your supply, and limiting his feeds may lead to low milk supply. The best way to deal with this is just to ride it out. It'll all settle down before too long.

sounds like he's going thru a growth spurt! my dd does this every couple of weeks! i feel like some days she is permanently attached to my boob  sorry to say but there's not a whole lot u can do but ride it out :hugs:
The only thing I could think of was that this was a growth spur also. I just thought it odd that he is so young. I know my supply is fine as he put on 480g in one week!!! The child health nurses have commented on how much I have (had in DS2 case as he drains me every feed.) even DS1 used to drowned in it. I don't mind feeding ever 2 hours or so if its what he needs. I was just interested as I'd never heard of a baby feeding so much at such a young age.
yep. it can feel like a big continuous breastfeeeding session in the early daze.
gets so much easier, usually, as time goes on.
:hugs:
yep my ds did this, sometimes he fed again after only 1 hour! I always had so much milk and I am still really lucky with my supply, I am only feeding him once in the morning and once at night now but still if I give my nipple a little squeeze in the shower it still comes spurting out! Much better to have too much than not enough! My DS put on 1.5kg in his first 4 weeks!! He is still at about the 97th percentile for both weight and height so I think he needed all that nourishment as he is going to be a big boy!

I also have a hungry little boy...or should i say big boy!! Hes 6 months now and over 10 kilos..will have to weigh him to see exactly what he is now. At first he was putting on 500 grams a week and went through a growth spurt every 3 weeks where he was feeding every hour to 2 hourly. I had to drink gallons of water to stop getting dehydrated and craved milkshakes like you wouldnt believe!!! But hes settling down a bit now that hes started solids.
Its hard work at times, but if you can arrange it so at feeds you can do something like catch up with a friend on the phone or watch a favourite show you've taped. That way it wont feel like quite a burden. I still call my family and friends while im feeding...it seems to be the only chance i get as when hes asleep i like to get the housework done!!
Thank you all for the reassurance. Even though I should know better I couldn't help but wonder if I was over feeding him a little.
I tend to bub hub while feeding hence the fact that I'm on a lot more lately. :D Either that or playing with DS1 sometimes even both.
