View Full Version : fever 39,5
Hello everyone!
I'm slightly panicking... just checked my daughters temperature and it was 39,5!!
She's had fever yesterday and ist didn't rise over 39, so I thought it was her grinders, that are coming through. She was fine today, with temperature over 38 though, but happy and eating and drinking fine.
I gave her a panadol half an hour ago and she is sleeping now, but I'm still worried as I dont know where the fever comes from..
When is it time to see a doctor? Can the fever rise that high from teething?
I'm invited to a party toninght and DH stays at home but I don't really want to go...:(
Thanks
Carolin
I had the same thing happen with Chloe a couple of weeks ago, i was freaking out too but i rang the hospital to see if i should take her in & they said that if she is happy & playing & eating alright them not to worry to much it when they are not doing all that stuff that we should bring them in.
Her temp went away after a couple of days & i still don't know what it was from.
But you should call the hospital & see what they say.
I know i say this all the time but its better to be safe then sorry hay.
Hugs to you i hope you lil one gets better soon :(

Fevers are a good thing. It means the body is doing what it's supposed to. I'll second Kimmy's good advice. Keep checking her temp every hour or two this evening and as often as you feel you need to during the night. If the temp doesn't respond to panadol, persists till tomorrow, or goes any higher then I'd be off to the hospital straight away. But it may well come back down on it's own.

My DS spikes fast high temp to just over 40 with ear infections (he's had about 3). By the time you realise he has a fever, it's already spiking and high enough that he can't keep anything (even water down).
I find that a tepid bath and then having him just in a nappy (not in the breeze though) is enough to bring it down to about 38 pretty quickly. He then has Nurofen (Panadol comes straight back up:eek: ) every few hours until it passes. The worst one went for 3 days before it settled ...and the nurofen wore off about an hour before I could give him another dose. I slept in his room and checked him every hour or so.
The Drs have always turned me away unless it can't be controlled with medication.
It will pass but stay close to bubby in the meantime. If you are ever really stressed, take bubs straight to emergency.
I agree. While they are happy and normal, just hot, keeping them cool etc is good.
I recently had DD2 at emergency because she had a fever and was screaming for 2 hours inconsolably and we thought it might be her ears. The very nice pediatrician who saw me had a toddler of her own and diagnosed a virus and teething.....she said that teething can only account for a fever of 37.5 - anything over that is not caused by teething - it is a virus of some sort, so do keep an eye on her. The other thing that is good to know for a fever that isn't responding to nurofen or panadol is that you can piggyback the two drugs - so you can give one dose of nurofen and one dose of panadol within the time for the first dose - you don't need to wait for the time to run on the dose of the other drug (if that makes sense).

Yep if she is acting normal then i would just keep the panadol or neurofen up to her to help & as draught said piggy back them another thing is dose them on their weight not age if bubs is a little bigger for her age.
My bubs had a virus the other week & it was horrid he ran temps of 39.5 so i would keep him stripped off & put him in a tepid bath when i needed to. I piggy backed the drugs as well as giving him double doses under doctor supervision as he even came out in a rash as his body was fighting it he ended up on antibiotics.
The main issue is keep her fluids up & this means either via milk, water or juice but if she wont take any of these try anything & everything again this is what i had to do with my bubs as he refused everything ! I ended up having him live off a little apple juice & some watered down gatorade & cordial. He also would sit in the bath & suck on the face washer so this is also a way of getting them to have something.
If it keeps going as other have advised get her to the doctors or even a sign of a rash get going !
Good luck i hope all settles down & bubs gets better soon :)
Thanks so much everyone for your replies.
Well, I gave Emily a Panadol and put her down and she slept all through the night. The next morniung she still had a bit of a temperature, but by noon she was up to 39,5 again. I rang the hospital and they told me to come and get her checked.
We spent 3 hours there, but they couldn't find anything and Emily was as fit as ever ...of course... when we were there and so they decided to let us go home.
The it's the 4th day with fever today, but the doc said there is no need to come as long as the fever goes down with Panadol. It does, but I can't give her Panadol forever...
We'll see, it'll eventually go down by itself. But I find it strange that babies get that high fever without any obvious reasons..
Anyway thanks for reading
hugs :)

hello again!!
I finally found out what the fever came from. Emily had Roseola. That's a virus-infection and it's typical that they get high fever for 3 or so days and then they get a rash on their back, and the fever vanishes. It has no side effects and once they had it they are immune for the rest of their lives. :)
Thank god I can stop worrying now!!!

Yep thats what my bubs had the other week :)
Took him 5 days to get over & we are now currently trying to get him back into a routine of some sort to which he is refusing LOL
The fun of it all :D
