It has been ages since I have logged onto Bubhub for a lot of reasons but have recently started to feel slightly more human and decided to get back into it.
Sarah Ann Emma arrived by emergency c-section on the 8th May, 2007 which just capped off an eventful pregnancy for me!
I was so excited when i found out i was pregnant and just looking forward to the whole experience! Morning sickness started at 9 weeks and went until 21 weeks with me throwing up on average three times a day and losing 8 kilos... not an ideal start. Finally got over the morning sickness when i was diagnosed with arthritis in my knee, hip and wrist because of the pregnancy hormones ( ) which i had never heard of before. Get that right and then get gestational diabetes which was not too bad and i could control by diet.
Leave work on maternity leave 4 weeks before my due date thinking i would be kicking back and relaxing before my beautiful baby arrived. On the Tuesday after i went on leave i woke up with a swollen eye. Was not sure whether to worry or not so I rang my Ob to see if I could get into him a couple of days early for my appointment. He was fully booked and advised me to try my GP and if unsuccessfull they would double book me and I could wait. Rang the GP and got the same story but ended up going down and waiting. Went in for my appointment and the GP thought my eye was an allergic reaction but decided to check my blood pressure while i was there. He proceeded to check if then did a double take. Rolled the cuff up and then took it again....then went into the other consulting room and got a different machine and retook it. Then asked for a urine sample and my Ob's number.
Now i wasn't really panicking at this stage just wondering what was going on. My Ob advised that I would have to go to hospital and be monitored for the day. Told them ok and prepared to go on my merry way when the GP told me that I couldn't drive because I was in danger of having a stroke or fit from my blood pressure. Now I started to panic a little. Rang my DH who had to run down from home and pick me up to take to hospital.
At this point I really started to stress(probably not advisable with my blood pressure!). I hadn't packed my bag.... had nothing at home to take. Went to the hosp with only the clothes i was wearing. Arrived at the hospital and was placed in a birthing suite. Now I had never even seen inside a birthing suite because I was having a c-section because of an existing back injury and the gestational diabetes.
A very cheery nurse came in and started to chat to me while she took my blood pressure. Once she saw the reading she disappeared out of the room quite quickly and came back with three other nurses. All of a sudden I had them all buzzing around me giving me medication and asking heaps of questions! The end result was that I ended up on a drip getting medication put into me at a great rate of knots to try and bring my blood pressure down. My reading at this point was 220/154. Not good at all.
All I was worried about was my baby and they placed a foetal monitor of her and she was not distressed in any way which was good. My Ob attended about two hours later and looked at my test results and then calmly informed me that I would be having my baby in 1 hour, which was the quickest that could be arranged. Now I started freaking out. My DH was looking fairly white at this point and rushed out to call my mother and MIL to inform them of developments
Sarah was delivered at 3.20pm on the 8th May, 2007 and weighed only 1960grams. She was whisked away into Special Care where she could be monitored. I saw her briefly before she left but that was all i was allowed because my blood pressure was still not stabilised. DH went with her to make sure she was ok. I was placed in a room and had a nurse with me for 24 hours to administer medication and monitor my pressure.
End result is that I was in hospital for 10 days in total (at a cost of $6K.... yay health fund!!) and Sarah was in Special Care for a total of 21 days (haven't seen that bill yet!) I still have high blood pressure but the doctor's are hopeful that it will stabilise and disappear in the next couple of months. Otherwise I will be on medication forever.
It is all worth it tho considering what the alternative might have been...... Not sure if i will be going back for another given all the health difficulties I went through with Sarah.
That is my story..........
