Hi Ladies, I am a breastfeeding mum who has to go back to uni. in Feb. I am trying to wean my 6mth. od DD onto formula but I can't get her to take a bottle.
I would even contimplate expressing if I could just get her to take the bottle. She just simply refuses, and chucks a tanty until I give in and give her the breast. Any suggestions or advice??

hey hon (hugs)

sorry bubs is giving you a hard time!!! my first question is what teat are you using?? some are more 'nipple like' than others??? my DS is given both bottle and breast and is ok with both - we use the pigeon perastaltic (sp?) teats??? pigeon have different types... but the perastaltic (sp? again  ) were recommended by the midwives as the closest to the nipple?

hope this helps???

((hugs))

my boy wouldnt take any bottles but the NUK ones. I know ALOT of people who have had the same problem, they are flatter on the ends like a nipple and the hole where the milk comes out isnt at the top of the teat but aimed at their tounge..if that makes sense? Anyway i suggest you try these teats if you havent because they are great!!! Let me know how you go :)

I had similar problems with both my daughters. I ended up weaning DD1 onto a cup with a straw but she was a little older than yours.

Wtih dd2 I expressed milk and found that if I wasn't around and someone else gave her the bottle when I wasn't there she was far more likely to take it than if I was in the house. So maybe try leaving her with someone like your partner or mum and leaving them a bottle to give her at a time when she would normally have a feed, so you know she is hungry, and see how you go. (The different nipples made no difference at all with my daughters and I bought all sorts - the issue for the first was that she wouldn't suck anything - just thought they were funny, and the second wouldn't take anything if I was around.)

Hi there,

Yep highly recommend the NUK Teats, and they are also anti-colic in nature.

Good luck.

I only breast fed both my kids for about a week each so I'm not sure I can be much help to you...but anyway...
My DS only ever used the Pur orthodontic teats. We tried him on Nuk , Avent and a few others first but thats all he would use. DD on the other hand, she is 2mths old, will only drink from the Avent ones. We tried her on Pur first and she refused them.
Have you seen the Pur juice spouts? They are silicone, spout shaped, obviously...and have 4 holes across the top. My ds was drinking water using those from about 5 or 6 mths old without a problem. They just fit onto a bottle like a normal teat. Maybe you could try those if she isn't drinking from a cup yet.
Also, a few people I know had their bubs drinking only from a cup by about 8mths old...no bottles or breastfeeding at all.

Good luck :) Hope you find a solution soon :)

This might sound like the stupidest thing you have ever herd BUT...
An experienced nanny told me that if you put the bottle under your arm and hold the baby in a nursing position this can trick them into thinking that its a booby.... She said she had to do it for a family that the mum went back to work and was weaned from the breast to bottle that way...
Hey what ever works right!!!!!!
Good luck:D

my dd loved the nuk ones(bottle and teat) too but in the end they made her too windy. So i brought a special air bottle that takes the air bubbles out and put the nuk teats on it.

Just a quick update and a few questions...

Still no luck getting her to take the bottle. I have been trying with the pigeon teat, I can get it in her mouth but thats about as far as she'll go before the performance starts. I left my df to have a try tonight, he said she had a bit of a chew on it, but then kept pushing it out. I have been expressing milk, as I figure I'll have more luck using my milk then with formula.
Does anyone have any tips technique wise...I just sit her on my lap, reclining back slightly and then attempt to give it to her. Call me stupid, but I'm going to give the underarm thing a go tommorow.
I'm frustrated and tired. It feels like I have been occupied with this for the last week. I'm tempted to give up, ARRGH.

My DD wouldn't take formula for a while, but i kept persisting with her and now she has no problems at all, she just gradually increased the amount she was having as she had to get use to the formula, will she take breast milk from the bottle? If she will maybe she just needs to get used to formula milk to.

Hiya...
well i had exactly the same problem.I tried to give my son the bottle (breast milk and formula-he REFUSED!)
So I gave up trying, purely because i dont hink that he was ready to wean himself of the breast.I tried a month or so later and he loved the bottle.
But if you cant wait till bubby weans off naturally-just persist. If they are hungry they'll drink!

is there anyway you can feed between classes...is childcare nearby (do the dash from one to the other, or get them to call when she needs you)

when i was finishing uni I was able to take Jarrah to class with me to feed etc, would your uni do this at all??

go with what your bub tells you

best of luck

Well ladies, after over 2 weeks of trying, 4 different teats, 3 different formulas, 6 days of partially expressing, many a stressful moment, a few sleepless nights, enlisting the help of DF, my sister and my mum, I have decided to GIVE UP!

Yes you heard me....GIVE UP.:)

I'm going to defer my studies for a year. I don't want to push Porsha into anything she's not ready for. She has been quite unsettled...I guess she just loves "the good stuff" to much to give it up just yet. I get to enjoy just being a mum for a whole year!

Thnaks for your tips and advice!
