I had been in labour since Saturday afternoon (the 2nd of June.) I went into the hospital at 9:30pm to find out what was going on as they were still very irregular, I was told that I was in labour and that something would most likely happen in the next 24hrs. We went home happy to get as much sleep as I could before it got too painful. This continued till my induction date the following Tuesday, by then I was rather sore and tired but happy that I'd be meeting my baby soon. Once we got to the hospital I was told that I wouldn't be induced as they had had a few emergencies and didn't have enough staff on. I wasn't happy the only thing that had gotten me through the weekend was that if nothing happened I only had till Tuesday to wait. On top of all this they told me that they wanted to keep me in hospital because they believed I could go at any time. This was mainly because with my first I was only in established labour for 4hrs.
Staying in hospital was the last thing I wanted but in the hope that they would induce me that afternoon I stayed while DH and everyone else went home. They called me in again at 2pm to be monitored, revealing that I was still having irregular contractions and only 2cm dilated with bubs head only 1/5 down. At this point I’d had enough, they wouldn’t tell me when they would break my waters and were sure that they would break naturally very soon. By this stage I knew that this baby wasn’t going to be coming any time soon by himself but as I’ve found so often before the doctors thought they were right and didn’t want to listen. They then wanted me to stay in hospital but there was no way I was going to do that. If they wanted me to relax I wasn’t going to be able to do it while still in hospital. They let me go home in the promise that if anything happened I’d come straight in and to be back in at 8am the next morning for a check up.
We went back the next morning I was so sure nothing was going to happen I left all my bags at home (we live a block away from the hospital) good thing I did. When we arrived the doctor from the night before was just leaving and asked how I was. She was shocked to hear that nothing had happened over night. Just after 8am they hooked me up and I was told again that nothing had progressed. No one had really said anything to me but I knew it was because bub was lying on my left side and no matter what I did he just wouldn’t move. They then told me that they couldn’t induce me as they had no free beds. I was pretty numb to what they had to say by this stage, I was told to go home rest and they’d give me a call sometime in the afternoon as to when they had a free bed. By 12:30pm with no phone call I was thinking I’d be in for another long night, we got the call at 1:30pm to come in at 2:30pm. So again I ran around getting things ready for DS for when I was away, still knowing there was a chance they would be sending me home in an hour or two.
We got to the hospital a little early hopping that it might speed things on a little. We ended up waiting an hour before anyone came in to see me. I was monitored yet again and still nothing new. The head was now 3/5 down but not fully as he was still on my left side. After talking between themselves for a while they said they would break my waters. This didn’t happen till 5:30pm after that I did a lot of pacing and timing the contractions. They were still irregular and not very painful I started to worry that I could need a c/sect if this baby wouldn’t come out. Between 5:30pm and 8pm the contractions were still irregular and still not too painful. At 8pm the wanted to monitor me again so I was strapped up and stuck on the bed again. The contractions were still irregular by 9pm and the midwife started talking to me about getting a drip in to help speed things up. She told me that the baby wasn’t in the best position which wasn’t helping the contractions. If they put a drip in it would increase the contractions and push the baby into the right spot. Due to the fact that the midwife couldn’t find a good vain and that the doctor was meant to be coming soon they left me for a little while. After a little while I asked DH to check the monitor and tell me how long I’d been laying there it was now 9:20pm and all of a sudden the contractions started getting stronger and regular. They were quite painful too so I asked if I could have some gas.
From about 9:45pm till when bub was born is a bit of a blur as it happened so fast. I remember that when I was having contractions and sucking on the gas I felt like I was hallucinating. At about 10:30pm during one of my contractions I thought I felt the need to push, I told DH how managed to run out tell the midwives and run back with out me really knowing that’s how out of it I was. When the contraction was over I really felt I had imagined that I needed to push and just couldn’t believe that it had happened so fast. It was too late though as the midwife was already back doing an internal as another contraction hit me she was telling me to push and in the state I was in I just didn’t believe that it was time yet. With the next contraction I realised what was going on and managed to concentrate enough on pushing. As painful as it was it was also amazing to be able to feel everything. After what felt like only a few minutes at 10:56pm on the 6th of June Sebastian James was born weighing 3570g length of 52cm and head measuring 35.5cm. With an established labour of just over one and a half hours with only gas, I have to say it was one of the most amazing and painful experiences of my life. There were no complications and he was healthy it was the birth I wanted but didn’t dare believe I would get.
Sebastian will be 2wks tonight and a perfect angel. I have some photos posted in the gallery here is the link.
