Hi i was just wondering if anyone uses the SMA formula and if they have good or bad experiences. I am currently using S26 alpha pro but the price different between this and say SMA or heinz is nearly half price. Any suggestions would be great, my boy is 3 months old.

I gave my DD SMA formula from around 2 months to around 20 months. She had no adverse reactions to it, such as constipation, and as far as I know didn't miss out on any of the "extras" that go into the Gold formulas. Though I obviously can't measure that!
I chose SMA based on price and because it was one that I remembered my CHN mentioning. I admit I was confused by the huge selection in the supermarket, didn't understand the different codings (HA, Gold, etc) and so it was a bit of an arbitrary decision and not really researched.
SMA is made by Wyeth, the same company that does the S26 series. SMA is an older formulation and doesn't have some of the newer "extra" bits that will be in the S26 Gold. The benefit of the newer extra stuff is argued about sometimes.
Some nurses told me (after I'd started DD on it) that SMA is a "heavier" formulation which is usually only recommended for very hungry bubs who aren't satisfied on the newer formulas. I'm not sure if this is because SMA has a higher fat content, or a higher content of something else. When I started DD on forumula it was because she had lost considerable weight so that may be why my CHN suggested it in particular.

Oh... and if you research SMA on the web be sure to notice where each website is from. Wyeth markets formula in the USA and UK under the same SMA name, but I believe there that it is closer to our S26 and not the same as their SMA in Australia.

I remember trying DD1 on SMA when she was about 4 months (because of the price difference too), and it didn't agree with her, she brought it back up all the time...as soon as i put her back onto S26, she was fine.....That doesn't mean that its not a good formula though, i've known lots of mums that use it, and they never had any dramas....As with everything, every bub is different and will react differently to different things....Geez did that make sense? :o It certainly can't hurt to try it, and lucky you if its alright....it'll certainly help the hip pocket!:p
