View Full Version : Only a pass!?
Hi guys,
Hope all your studying is going well. My studying was until today when I got my first major assignment back.
I only got a pass. My concern is the effort and time I put into it. The tutor also stated that the essay was very well researched and I understood the issues, however my sentence structure/grammar etc made it difficult to read.
I was shocked as rubbed out in pencil was a 34/40 and I got a pass.
It just makes you question why you study when your grading and future is reflective on one persons decision. This is primarily the reason I have chosen not to study externally in the past, there is no assistance with the underlying issues of your assignment, merely a statement about your inabilities!:banghead:
Sorry, just needed to vent!

You have a right to vent especially if rubbed out was 34/40 (which is 85% which is a distinction/high distinction).........................maybe you should appeal it based on the fact that the tutor rubbed out a much higher mark than the one you were allocated. Also spelling and grammar should have been worth enough to take a distinction/high distinction down to a pass should it????
Do you have a copy of the marking criteria? most essays have a break down eg 10 marks for grammar/spelling, 20 for content things such as that.
At least you passed though but I can understand the vent most definately.
Did you get people to read through it before handing it in? I get my mum, DH and my brother to read through my essays (my bro is a uni lecturer and although he doesnt know the subject he knows how essays should be set out and how they should sound)........
What was the average for the class do you know?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm 85% then marked down to just a pass (is that between 50-59%?) is a bit harsh!!!
:hugs:
I decided actually based on my past marks to appeal it. I also had a different marker to my usual one, so not sure if that had something to do with it.
Thanks for replyng, appreciate it! I do actually read it over the phone to my nan (she is quite on the ball about sentence structure etc) and read it to my Dh to confirm any other errors.
Not sure of the average, this subject has been pathetic in responding, my first 3 assignments were not graded for about 2 months after sumbission.
Thanks again

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm it doesnt sound all that right.
I would appeal it saying:
* You dont think there is a problem with sentence structure/grammar and you got it edited etc (Maybe the tutor isnt good with english-my sister had that problem once)
*There is a rubbed out mark of 34/40 which is a high grade compared to a mark, so why did you get marked so high and get it pulled down to a pass mark? That means that spelling and grammar had more emphasis than it should have in terms of marks.
* Lack of consistency with the marking
Do you have a marking criteria saying how much spelling/grammar is worth? That could also help in the appeals process.
Good luck with your appeal I think you have every right to appeal it!!!
What are your other marks like??????????
If you ever want a second opinon on your essays, I am sure some of us bubhubbers would be "proof readers" for you.............
It sounds like your tutor that marked it is a bit "whacked".
If anything get a proper explanation as to why you were marked so low when you obviously went to great lengths to make sure that it was neat, legible, understandable and well researched.
If you understood the assignment and did the research as well as the tutor said you did, spelling/grammar shouldnt have been enough to lower your mark as much as it has been.
If anything good research etc should be a credit because thats whats most important IMO.

My Dh has a similar issue- except his was a fail. I told him to go back to the lecturer and ask him for more information on where it was lacking. When they went back the lecturer said it was a error and was actually a credit. And then when it was sent back again it ended up being a disinction. I think it really can depend on a mood and personal opinion.
I know it really sucks. I know it can be really disappointing too. But take faith in knowing after I finished my study I really don't think I've shown more than 3 people my physical results and getting a credit or distinction didn't really make much of a difference to the interviewer as long as I passed. I was once told that a credit or distinction were just a waste of drinking time lol

did u appeal it yet????
Yes and would you believe they have not got back to me since the 18.6!!!
Cant understand how hard it is to get back to someone or remark it.
So at the moment, still have no idea about the outcome.
