View Full Version : Help. trouble with sewing machine
I have been trying to make some nappies today and I am just about ready to throw my sewing machine out the window. It is just over 12 months old. Anyway, when I did the last 5 or so attemps there was heaps of cotton on the under side of the fabric, which means having to unpick it and start again. I am wondering if anyone knows what causes this???? It is driving me mad as I really want to make these nappies.

What kind of fabrics are you trying to sew?

This might be obvious but make sure you have the presser foot down.
It sounds like maybe your fabric is moving smoothly along the machine, like it's kinda getting stuck.... try helping it move thru a bit more, pull it thru from the other side as you sew.
If that fails, re-thread the bobbin and needle if you haven't yet.

Could be your tension too :)
mine does that when it has dust in the bobbin case;)

Mine does that when I thread the bobbin backwards (you'd think I'd know by now!) :o

Do you have the correct size bobbin?
What kind of fabrics are you trying to sew?
I was doing 2 layers of hemp or bamboo and a layer of polar fleece but changed to one layer of hemp/bamboo and 1 layer of polarfleece and it was still doing it but mainly near where I put the elastic.

Yes the presser foot is down.

I tried that but maybe I didn't move it fast enough for the machine.
If that fails, re-thread the bobbin and needle if you haven't yet.
I have re threaded the machine and it is still doing it. The bobin is less than half ful I wonder if that could be the problem?
Could be your tension too :) I fiddled with the tension and it seems fine till I get near the elastic.
mine does that when it has dust in the bobbin case;) I blew in it hard so there shouldn't be any dust in it.
Mine does that when I thread the bobbin backwards (you'd think I'd know by now!) :o No I'm not threading it backwards. :)
Do you have the correct size bobbin?Yes I went to spotlight yesterday and bought some new ones as it was happening with the old ones and I got the right bobins for my machine.
Is your needle in backwards. Sounds silly but i have done it.

I asked my mum if the needle goes in with the flat part at the front or back and she said the back. Is that right????

Take the plate off, take the bobbin out, get your little brush and get all the fluff out. It may look OK but there is probably a huge amount of fluff in you machine. Nappy making fabrics especially hemp and fleece have loads of fluff come off when you sew.
Otherwise your machine may be due for a service. If you have used it a lot over the last 12 months

yep
thanks hoop, I will go try that now. I will be back if it doesn't work.
Ok, it is afficial, it is only happening when I go to topstitch next to the elactic. It has been fine everywhere else but there. I am trying to close the whole at the back where I turn it back in the right way and then topstitch it shut but the cotton is getting all tangled up on the underside but it is coming from the cotton up top. I am getting peeved with it again. The only way I can think of to do it is to turn it by hand instead of using the foot pedal. I hope all this makes sense.

Heve you got a walking foot, if not invest in one - they are fab
Try increasing your stitch length aswell
I will have to get a walking foot. I managed to get it to work by turning the machine by hand. Very slow and hurt the hand but worth it to see the finished product finally.

you might need a sharper needle too :D
Can't wait to see pics :D
I have fully completed my first nappy with snaps. I love it. My camera is broken :crying: :banghead: so I will get a friend to take a pic of it and I will post it.
