View Full Version : Swollen - Lumpy breasts in baby
I have an 11 day old daughter, Eli, who has developed very swollen breasts.
I have read that its common after birth for swelling due to hormones, but was wondering if its normal for the swelling to be very hard - lumpy and red looking.
I suspect it may be hormonal because both breasts are the same. Has anyone else had someting similar?
I'm a bit of a worryer and i am sure that it may be normal but i am worried anyway.
My DD had a very swolen and lumpy left breast.. it looked very sore but it was nothing.
If you're really concerned you should ask your midwife or GP but it sounds normal and is very common.:)
My dd had the same thing:eek: , and she even had milk (not much just enough to notice! ) but yes it was all normal!thank god but see your gp if you don't think its normal! trust your insticts as a mummy!!

Sarah had that too, I got a little freaked out by it as well.
At your next checkup ask your GP about it. It's probably completely normal and the lumps will slowly go away over the next few weeks.
Freaky stuff, this parenting, hey? Congrats on your beautiful little girl!

My DD had that too... Just keep an eye on it because it can get infected.. My DD's swelled right up and became puss filled, it happened in a period of a couple of hours... She ended up needing some antibiotics and it eventually popped by itself (was very, very messy!!!) and healed up perfectly...
If it becomes sore to touch, or the skin becomes really tight and you can see there is some puss developing underneath, take her to the Dr just to be sure...

That's something my GP told me to keep an eye on - that if it becomes infected it might be an abscess and that would need medical attention. No worries though, it was all smooth sailing for us.
I'd say it's just the hormones. Keep an eye on it as here is my story (not to scare you but to make you aware) ....
My 7 month old had the same thing for about a week. Then I thought best take him to the docs just in case. The GP thought it was the hormone thing from stopping b/feeding as it was only pea size when she saw him but within 24 hours it was huge and red. We went to emergency on Saturday of this past long weekend and came out on Tuesday! He was an IV of antibiotics the entire time poor little guy. Great long weekend we had. :crying:
