How old is he? Both of mine were like this until we turned them to face the front. (8kgs and when they have good head & trunk control).
Child health nurse said some kids hate the car because they get overwhelmed with all the images flashing by outside and cos they are facing backwards it makes it even harder to process the info.
She suggested making an "exclusion zone" so they focus within the car rather than try to look out of the windows - eg stick those window screens on the side and back windows to filter a lot of the images, hang toys just in front of them so they focus on the toys etc
Otherwise, both mine eventually just grew out of it and now love trips in the car.
Good luck!

Hi there
Lachlan was (and sometimes still is - but not as bad) a TERRIBLE traveller :(
He did get a little better once we turned his car seat around to face frontways.
I found that he was worse when he was tired....so my aim then became to get him to fall asleep in the car...sometimes worked, sometimes didn't.
Anyway a friend of mine suggested (as she had had a similar problem) that everytime bub screams put a certain song on....and eventually it worked for both of us that when bub started whinging we'd put the CD in and "wheelah" bub stopped crying! :D Sometimes you have to play it over and over for the whole trip...but hey it is better than listening to a baby scream.
I'd say for Lachlan it works 97% of the time..which is great! Luckily for DH and I it is a song we like (Train...Drops of Jupiter).
We have resorted to copying the CD for mum's car, and for in his bedroom if he is chucking a real "nana" :p
It even puts him to sleep most of the time now! ;)
Hi Eathan's Mum,
Caitlyn is now 8 months and was exactly the same. She had reflux (and still does) and would scream most of the time in the car. I used to catch a bus if I could because I could carry her in a sling and she would be fine. I don't have any instant fix solutions but I just wanted to say it does get better with time. She now loves to go in the car and will even fall asleep if she is tired.
Turn the music up and sing really loudly. It may not help bubs but it is a good distraction for you!
Best of luck
Jo
