View Full Version : Mouth clamped & Bottle refusal :(

My 6 month old son will eat 'some' pureed food but clamps his mouth shut for most. He is really interested in whatever we are eating but I have trouble thinking of new things that he can try at his age. Any suggestions? One more question! He has also decided in the last two months to refuse any bottles (formula or breastmilk) - this makes leaving him with his Grandma (for my sanity :p ) impossible for more than a few hours.
Anyone else had this problem?

Mine decided that bottles were not as interesting as solids. She cut back from 5 bottles to 3. So I made sure I gave formula with cereal, lots of pureed fruit to make up the decline in oral fluid intake.

With solids, I used washable toys and funny faces to get her to open her mouth.
She eventually just opened her mouth freely. Don't try too many foods too quickly let him get established with what he likes and if he doesn't like one food today try again tomorrow. When I first gave apple to Grace she pulled the awful face, and now it is one of her favourite fruits.

At six to 7 mths Grace was eating cereal, pureed fruits (banana, apple, pear, mango, peaches), mashed vegies (potato, pumkin, carrots, peas, corn, zucchini), yogurt, custard, and 7 mths on pureed chicken, beef, lamb, mince, pork (with the vegies)

Hope that helps

Hi, I have heard of other mums using a dummy to get a bottle-wary baby to feed. Just let them get a rythym going with the dummy and then slip the bottle in (its worth a try)
