Baby and infant swimming lessons are widely available in swimming
centres throughout Australia. Private teachers and mobile
swim schools are another option for those wanting either individual or
group lessons in a public or home pool.
Swim centres have differing minimum ages for infant 'Learn to Swim' programmes, although 6 months is the most common. Lessons must be booked in advance at most schools, generally in blocks of approx 2 months duration following the school terms. Payment terms do differ - check whether your chosen centre requests pre-payment of blocks or allows you to pay lesson by lesson. Some centres offer free 'make-up' lessons which allow you to swop your usual class for another at a different time if you have to miss your regular slot. But you are usually allowed only one or two missed sessions during any one block - again, rules differ from centre to centre, so check at the time of booking. If you do need to miss a number of lessons, ensure that you advise the school and request that your place is kept open for you - some may require a retainer to be paid for missed lessons.
Swim Australia is the Learn-to-Swim Promotion and Swim School
Development division of the Australian Swimming Coaches & Teachers
Association (ASCTA). The Swim Australia programme certifies swim
facilities - included in its criteria for certification are
the standard of facilities provided and assurance that all teachers
are qualified by the ASCTA. If you would like to check if schools from
the list below are certified, view the list of Swim Australia
certified schools here.
In our listings, we have included schools that take children under 2 years of age. We have not listed swim schools whose classes start with children over 2 years of age.
